Obvious Error in Silicon Valley

In S02E0 when Russ is pitching Richard to become his financier, Russ describes how he earned his wealth by selling out to AOL for 1.2 Billion then "Now a couple decades later, i'm worth 1.4"

Then is S02E07 when Russ experiences financial difficulties "i've managed to lose over 200 million dollars"

Now i'm not great at math, but how does this make him fall below 1 billion? it seems the writers messed up, and went with his 1.2 original worth when they crunched their numbers, and forget that they wrote into the show that he had built that from 1.2 to 1.4....

seems pretty basic. there are a few other very simple errors on this show that stand out and frustrate me from time to time.

but i still love it... did everyone else notice this stuff?

I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure he sold for billion and his gain over the years was pretty much eaten by inflation (according to Richard's calculation)

Inflation doesn't factor in to this math. he stated outright that he was worth 1.4B on that day in the restaurant. Then stated in the later episode, that he had lost just 200 million.
the math is pretty simple unless i'm missing something. yes you're right it's 1.4 that's been inflated over time, but it's still 1.4 as of the current date when they eat in the restaurant.

I didn't bring up inflation because I thought it was a factor, but as clarification.

He sold for 1 billion.

10 years later he was at 1,2

now he lost ,2

he's below 1 billion.

I have no idea where you're getting 1,4 from

He probably spent 200 Mil by then. So maybe he means he doesn't have 1 Billion in the bank account anymore? Maybe he is talking about his net worth which is possible if he spent that extra 200 MIl on dumb depreciating items/events.

Also, i may be reaching here, but maybe he didn't factor in income taxes.
