SPOILER FOR "DEVIL'S BRIDGE" ONLY

Just finished episode 1 of season 1 last night o n Netflix and I'm confused about the ending. I understand what happened to the students & the torture they went through but I have some questions if anyone knows the answers, I'd be grateful.

1. Who raped her as she asked the priest in the end ? Did she get pregnant then ? and are we talking about 2 babies ?

1. She was pregnant with her husband & baby died in womb & she's replaced it with a doll. Is that the baby she's looking for --- or ?

2. Her best friend in final scene tells her she was jealous of the baby for the mother's affection (I don't remember their names) and took "the breath from her baby so she could be with the angels ". ?

3.. Was baby ( 2nd reference) from a rape or husband? did she have a baby ? was that the one she was looking for? Was she really raped ?

To say I'm confused is putting it mildly. Please be kind in your remarks. I love that the show is in Wales. We visited northern Wales many years ago & it's
wonderful to see a show based there and I also like the lead. Very good acting.
Maybe it was the accents that made it hard for me to understand what they were saying? Not sure except that I had a lot of questions at the conclusion.
Many thanks

If you have trouble with the accents the subtitles help.

1. She was raped at 13 and told the priest and he didnt believe her.
1. She had a baby at 13. She got pregnant later in life with the husband, but lost the baby, Awen. When she had the baby at 13 she felt what it was like to be loved for the first time. She tried to capture that feeling by using the doll. when that didn't work she went looking for the baby she had when she was 13 who was named Emma.

You have two 1's!

2. Her friend Jenny didnt want the baby to replace her. jenny smothered the baby because she didnt want her only friend/love giver Caitlin in the world to divert her attention. Caitlin and jenny had never had anyone love them other than the baby or the friendship respectively so they didnt want that to go away and spent their whole lives looking for it.

3. The first baby was from rape. The second baby was from trying to get pregnant, caitlin lost the baby in the third trimester, and her and the husband used the pretend doll to cope with the loss. It didnt work and she went to find the first baby, named Emma, who we find out died, and was buried by the staff in the stone circle.

She had the baby in room 10 of the children's home/hotel and went there every year because it was the only place she had ever experienced what it was like to be loved

Who do you think raped her? Byron? The respected doctor?

Byron buried the baby Emma in a special spot with a nice stone piece to mark the grave, so I'm leaning towards him being the rapist, but I'm not positive.

reply

You don't learn the identity of the rapist until episode 4.

reply

Hey Lantzn,

I will not learn the identity of the rapist if I have to wait until the fourth episode. I watched the first two episodes and concluded this show was not for me. Let the next guy figure it out. I quit.

Best wishes,
Dave Wile

I don't think they ever said who the rapist was. This is a slightly above average police procedural with some nice plot twists, but the Devils Bridge sequence left a bunch of loose ends.

For one, the rape of Catrin John was never explained in terms of who or whether it happened in the Girls' Home.

For another, what was the point of the Byron character? He winds up dead, and almost seemed to serve no purpose in the narrative other than as somebody to interview for background. He didn't seem to really be involved in the bad doings' at the Girls Home.

reply

I inferred that the rapist was indeed , Byron.

reply

I mean I did, too, but was it ever spelled out clearly?

I want to like this show, but there are times it feels like a cheap copy of Broadchurch, minus the excellent David Tennant and with a much watered down supporting cast and an all-too-predictable set of local scandals.

I swear they must keep the budget down by having the one detective only ever wear a vest.

It was clearly stated that the rape happened in "the hard room" which was indeed, at the home.
