"The Girl in the Water"

The body of a young woman in a red dress is found in Borth marshes - but the killer has arranged the corpse very carefully. Mathias is determined to get the culprit, but the case pushes him to the edge, personally and professionally.

Feel this is miss-named. Should be "The Girl in the Marsh or Moors."

For me this was on of the scariest of the four.

I suspect what bothered me most about it was not just finding out who it was, and how, which was totally cool, but that he had this model of his own world above ground down beneath it. That he was this ordinary bloke with an ordinary job who liked to watch life taking place all around him rather than be involved in one himself.

And when Tom did what he did with the woman he turned because he'd never experienced that himself, that intimacy, so became belligerent and Tom fell from grace.

It isn't a small town thing either. Actually as we become more populated and live more and more with an on-line presence we can, if we're not careful, split ourselves in two where we, again unless you are yourself online same line in real-life, we can develop antisocial tendencies that hold us back from enjoying real-life connections.

And, no, age or culture have little to do with it. Actually, it is the 'now' generation(s) the last two at least that are coming up or did in an age of technology that are most affected. The most crippled. The most vulnerable.

Maybe it's just because my dad loved model railroads and I grew up with a layout in my basement, but as soon as we moved from a posed body to a model railroad enthusiast, I had the murderer nailed. The rest was just watching Tom figure it out.

Sad to say I must agree with this totally. Its been coming on for some time but it is coming on quickly now. Its a societal change like no other that I can think of.

I like social media but I use it carefully and don't use it as a substitute for real life.

Was he actually the girl's father or was this a fantasy?

reply

"Girl in the Field" because she's not in water.

I agree with you about the title. I also was amazed at Tom's recuperative powers and he slashed his hand badly and as soon as Gwen cleaned it - voila - it completely disappeared, not even a band aid!!
Also - don't they realise that people are quite savvy about the law these days and would know that any evidence gained from a search without a warrant would be inadmissable?

reply

Being that I am in the U.S. & we have different laws in regards to England/Wales-I always check these things out.

"Section 18 of PACE states that the police have the right to search premise directly linked to a suspect that has been arrested of an indictable offence. They can exercise this right if they reasonable believe it is a necessary step to obtain evidence contained within the premises.

Section 32 of PACE states that when a person is arrested for an indictable offence, the police have the right to search the premises they found the suspect in immediately prior to the arrest taking place. The police can exercise this power if the police constable reasonably believes the premises may contain evidence linked to the offence in question."

This is why She told Matthias to hurry because they would be releasing him. Once released, they would no longer have the "right" to be there w/out a warrant. His boss also told him if he found something he would obtain the warrant(2nd part from above)

Funny thing about the cut(s). We see his face, of course. His hand was one of those editing goofs, we see in everything.

I didn't get that brief scene at end where the Police boss guy goes into the cell with the guy who had a black eye earlier. What was that all about???? And the Police boss guy was always pointing the finger at the wrong person in most episodes, if Mathias hadn't been on the job they'd never catch anyone.

reply

I think we will get more insight into the backstory this season.

reply

The guy in the cell -- Alys's father -- was a former police officer who had worked under the "boss guy" before being dismissed (that was spelled out early in the episode). About 20 minutes before the end, Tom was in the file room, looking up info on that former officer, and saw that he had an unresolved case involving the child abuse at the children's home (1st episode). So I'm inferring that the "boss guy" wanted to beat up the former officer to keep him quiet -- that maybe the boss guy had some involvement with the abuse there, or he had turned a blind eye to it and didn't want his former officer talking with Tom about the case.

"All you need to start an asylum is an empty room and the right kind of people."

reply

Yes ,I think the superintendent has knowledge of the child abuse , along with the guy in the cell.

Indeed.
