My 'guilty pleasure' show . . . . . .

I first watched it curious to see Bradley and Jake did in a new show while their current shows still aired new episodes. Then I got hooked. It's on the verge of being my favorite show on Disney television. It's the only Disney XD show I watch regularly.

I don't know what appeals to me about Mighty Med because I'm not into super heroes and I've never been into comic books. I'm three weeks short of 62: about the only time I would read comics was on family vacation trips in grade school — my parents bought them so we kids wouldn't get bored on the long drives to and from Colorado or the Oregon coast. I read mostly Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse, Richie Rich and Baby Huey, but I did enjoy the "Metal Men" superhero comic on one trip. The superhero TV show or movie that appeals to me most is "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman," which was on ABC in the 1990s. (It' in syndication on the HUB Network.)

Maybe it's the "let-in-on-a-little-secret" angle of Mighty Med: two teenaged comic book experts stumble into dream jobs working in a hospital for superheroes but are not allowed to tell anyone about it. But the audience gets to be in on it. (I wonder if any of the Marvel gang will end up at Mighty Med, sort of a D-XD crossover event?)

Anyway, it's fun, escapist television. I've finally been able to catch every episode except the first one. (How did they discover the superhero hospital? Where is the entrance in that regular hospital?) [UPDATE, FIVE MONTHS LATER: I did eventually see the entire first episode; preceeding parenthetical questions answered.]

One appealing angle is the role reversal of Jake Short and Bradley Steven Perry. Jake's Fletcher on A.N.T. Farm was clueless and afraid of his shadow, but as Oliver he is the sharp, assertive, resourceful one. Bradley's Good Luck Charlie character Gabe was sharp, assertive and deviously clever. His Kaz is not a scaredy cat, but he's the easily distracted one with an overblown sense of "cool."

Yeah, I know filankey is not a word, but it's gonna catch on.

I agree - I started watching cuz my 11 yr old son adores it. But now my whole family will watch. It's well written, funny, good action, Skylar Storm is adorable and yes, Jake & Bradley are GREAT together!

Yes this is now my favorite show on Disney TV. I also watch Kickin It, Lab Rats, Liv and Maddie, Jessie, and I Didn't Do It. But right now Mighty Med is my favorite, it's funny and well written.

With great power comes great responsibility.

I have to agree too, its the best show on Disney TV right now.

This show is really really good. I was prepared to hate this show since these types of shows are usually overacted and i cant stand them but i was supremely surprised when i found myself loving the characters. I think the actors are really good in this. Great acting, great characters, good writing, and overall just joyful to watch. Good job with this show

It's like all the writers from Wizards of Waverly Place have joined this show. It's fun, has a sense of its own stupidity, and the premise gives a lot of potential for jokes.

Things like the super hero who came back from the 50s with his atomic yo-yo would go over the head of most kids but they make the jokes work on more than one level.

reply

I agree, but ALL good kid's programming does that - The Muppets, the Simpsons, Loony Tunes - they have kid level jokes but also grown up level stuff for the parents & teens to "get" as well. I like the show - silly and smart.

Amen to that. And it's like, on their way, those writers visited A.N.T. Farm to hone the art of sight gags and running jokes. Like the Wizards of Waverly Place writers, the Mighty Med writers can make it up as they go along -- keeping an eye on continuity of the characters' powers and personalities, of course.

About two months after my original post in this discussion (which was in April) Mighty Med became my favorite of all the DC-DXD shows now in production. No more guilty pleasure, now just pleasure.

Yeah, I know filankey is not a word, but it's gonna catch on.

"It's like all the writers from Wizards of Waverly Place have joined this show."

Remembering your comment from July after watching the Season 2 premiere last night, a thought occurred to me: Yes, and Gus is the new Max Russo -- just as off-the-wall unpredictable.

(Augie Isaac went through a growth spurt! Ain't puberty wonderful?)

Yeah, I know filankey is not a word, but it's gonna catch on.

I couldn't agree with you more! I also am outside this show's target audience, but I have to say that it's become a must-see every week because it's not like anything else on tv right now. At a time when original ideas are few and far between, it's good to finally see someone take a risk on something outside the box. That said, I also enjoy Lab Rats for the same reason.

Who hasn't done that?! Me neither, several times!

Disney is my escape valve from the depressing news of the day.

Mighty Med is one off-the-wall witty show. With such out-of-the-blue lines as Wallace and Clyde explaining how:
"We always finish each other's cen--"
"--terpieces made of pine cones."

And the expertly mirrored "Will you take no for an answer?" exchange in English, Russian, Swahili and sign language between Wallace-Clyde and Alan over Alan's comic book.

Yeah, I know filankey is not a word, but it's gonna catch on.
