Evelyn's childlike insistence to play the same games over and over again and embarrassing attempts at public precocity pointed to an unresolved mother/daughter issue too: the reassuring replay of her interactions with her domineering mother tempered by the fact that she was now in control of the dynamic allowed her to exist in a comforting moebius strip of her childhood.
I was struck by how submissive Cynthia was in trying to meet Evelyn's demands and the latter's dominance in their relationship. I'm not sure that Cynthia is a submissive though hence her turning on Evelyn in a moment of sadistic retaliation.
