Are most Belgians bilingual?

Because sometimes they spoke French

reply

according to my guidebook (going on holiday there soon) and indeed my several visits there this is the situation,60 per cent of Belgians are Dutch speaking Flemings and nearly 40 per cent French speaking Waloons, there are also a tiny minority of German speakers.

In the past the upper classes and powerful people were French speakers, the Flemish were the majority however.

But I understand that the position had changed, the Flemish are better off now and the older industrial French speaking areas are poorer.
The Flemish always had to learn French to get on in the country but the French speakers don't learn other languages as much, either English or Flemish.

All parts of the country are declared as either French speaking,Flemish speaking or German speaking,Brussels is bilingual.

But to answer your original question I think most Belgians are not bilingual, people in government jobs or in the armed forces must need to speak the other language but what about people in ordinary jobs?
Lots of people in Europe speak English as a second or other language.

I am not an expert,I have been to Belgium 4 times I think, more than I have been to any other foreign country(I am British)and the country fascinates me.
Having lived in Wales and visited Canada I get the impression that the language issue is one loved by politicians and endured by the people?

good research!

I lived in Belgium for 18 years and you pretty much summarised it.

In addition, a lot of politicians are bilingual as they have to be to get where they are. Though in Belgium, every Ministry has two cabinets, the Flemish one and the French one, for example, you have a French Minister of Education and a Flemish Minister of Education.

Indeed, I lived in Belgium too, grew up there.
Where were you, Lorraine?

I would say that in schools in Brussels you do learn Flemish and English at school, and in the Flemish and French speaking parts you learn English as well.

I think most young prople in the Flemish bit speak English quite well, a lot less in the French speaking bit

As for jobs, in Brussels at least depending on the job you do have to be bilingual
