Actor has gross ears
Everytime I see his ear I shudder. Looks like he wearing a an ear piece but it is really his gross ears.

And that's actually a big part of the story. The whole idea that he "can't hear the music anymore".
Also, when you take a look at Alex's flashbacks, you see the soldier firing the gun right next his ear. This is why he wears the hearing aide I reckon.
