I can't seem to get behind Anne Hathaway

The only movie I've seen her in where she played a believable character was Devil Wears Prada. But every movie I've seen with her, I cannot seem to get behind her character portrayals. I don't see what makes her such a bankable actress.

In this movie, the way she moved her arms and hands about constantly was as if she was in water. It would have actually translated well to an underwater re-imagining of this story. She came across so bland and dead, so lifeless. I'm not familiar enough with Tim Burton's visions of how Alice in Wonderland should come across and if this was indeed the way he/she/they wanted her portrayed, but it seemed like a very big flaw in an otherwise enjoyable movie.

On a side note, she often reminds me of Audrey Hepburn and I'll bet if a biopic were made, she could easily step into those shoes.

I thought Ann Hathaway did a superb job in this movie - the whole cast was really excellent: Depp, Mia, Bonham Carter, Sasha Baron Cohen, they all fulfilled their roles beautifully. Hathaway's hand motions and body language were like that in the first film - it's just a really stylized, fantasy, larger-than-life characterization, like all of the Underland characters - it's like she's so ethereal she's floating around in her own bubble. It was over-the-top fun, IMO.

Is that what it was supposed to be? "Ethereal?" I suppose that yes then, she's doing a good job of portraying that. I didn't see the first one (which is odd of me because I tend to enjoy Burton/HBC/Depp productions/movies). If it ever comes up on Netflix I want to see it.

I certainly did enjoy all of the other characters tremendously, but for some reason,....and maybe it's not the "ethereal" nature in and of itself,...but I just have yet to enjoy any characters played by Anne Hathaway. I figure I'm in the minority because she is pretty popular.
