Alice the Ship Captain

I find it hard to believe a woman would ever be a ship's captain in the 19th century, at the age of 22, while acting like a weirdo.

In fact if a woman back then was to step aboard one of those ships the entire crew would have all raped her.

Truly hard to believe and she did come off as a fool at Hamish's party!

well its a movie but there was Grace O'Malley

She was a pirate. They were more likely to make exceptions.

In fact, I'm pretty sure a woman wearing trousers at that time would have been hanged.

well man were jealous of a woman success even in some areas today. Not hanged but proably instutinilzied though

BUMP!!!

Are you an SJW ? If so, please kill yourself immediately! Thanks

reply

I'm no SJW. I just think it was unrealistic the crew didn't gangrape Alice.

reply

They didn't gang rape her because they had been too sated by raping each other. You really gonna tell me they never raped each other after being out at sea for months or longer? Ha!

I'm bulletproof, nothing to lose.
Fire away, fire away.

reply

I'm plenty they would have turned their attention towards her when she arrived.

I don't care about a troll who doesn't pay for his opinion telling me how to review movies.

You must be a fan of S. Clay Wilson and his various pirates, especially Captain Pissgums.

If you're not, you should be!

reply

The maybe you should get it into your head that this is a fantasy FICTION movie. You also failed to mention that Time can't be a person?

reply

Time is from another dimension, they have their own rules.

Not necessarily. It is all dependent on how it is created in the book/script. Sometimes it is instantaneous

There are no rules for a woman being a captain in a "fantasy" story just the same. You should go read or watch normal fiction or non-fiction drama books and movies instead if you want rules from the real world.

reply

She wasn't captain in the fantasy world. She was captain in the "real" world during a time where a woman would sooner be hanged than allowed to captain a ship.

reply

Okay. I'll play along with your belief that this is a real life story.

She was also hanging out in a magical fantasy world. Why don't you name when that happened in history.

reply

You don't know about suspension of disbelief, do you?

reply

Almost impossible. A captain will have to earn his post by virtue of being from an important or wealthy family or by passing throught the ranks. He had to be respected by his crew or at least feared by them. That requires a man. No woman would be respected and most probably she would be raped.
Women were not allowed as a crew in ships because it was too dangerous for them, not to mention she would considered a whore.
So this part is as fanciful as the rest of the movie.

reply

My theory is that we are supposed to think that since The Wonder was Alice's Father's ship, that he willed it to her,and put an iron clad clause in his will that only she was allowed to captain it. And I've been doing research, but coming up empty handed-does anyone know exactly who the first female ship captain in rl actually was,and what country she hailed from?

reply

I think that they had women as pirate captains in the past. But a female as a regular ship's captain is pure fantasy.

She reminds me of Juliet Mills dressed up as a midshipman in 'Carry On Jack.' She unconvincingly dressed up as a man in that movie and still managed to fool all the sailors.
