Four annoying things about 'The Town'

1) MARK comes home from London when he's told that his parents have been found dead. We're never told what he does in London, or anything about his private life. But we're asked to believe that he decides to throw up his job in London (and sell his house or flat?) to look after his teenage sister. After a couple of hours of work in the council offices, though, he is able to reorganise the council filing system! The character of 'Mark' doesn't make sense at all - he remains more of a mystery than anything else.

2) THE ARGUMENTATIVE LESBIAN FLORISTS look like the leftovers of a gay sitcom that never got made.

3) HARRY - the actor has been made to wear the sort of uniform worn by an 11-year old back in the 1950's. He looks very foolish and unreal wearing it - and he must have been deeply embarrassed to put it on.

4) THE TOWN has obviously been written by someone who knows little or nothing about local government. Martin Clunes acts and behaves as if he were the elected mayor of London or another big city - a Livingstone or a Johnson. Yet we're told that he's been Mayor for five years, and his successor is picked by the council 'cabinet' - rather than by the voters. The writer seems unable to decide whether his Mayor is an elected 'political' one - or (as would be more likely) a ceremonial figure who has no political power, someone who would serve as Mayor for a year, chosen because of his or her seniority on the council. Clunes's actual job would be leader of the ruling party on the council, and certainly not the Mayor UNLESS he was elected.

Harry goes to an expensive school, some of which do indeed have such uniforms.

I agree the mayor/council set up was a bit weird and unlikely, also the lesbian storyline was a bit tacked on. Not sure if the unreality of it all was intentional though.

...could you tell me what happened in the end? Can no longer find it on iplayer. Thanks!

I'm afraid I simply can't remember. But if you look on Amazon, it seems as if it's coming out on DVD soon. Is it perhaps 'on demand,' if you have cable?

The Mayor killed his parents, they killed his son in a hit and run years earlier. He hooked up again with his old girlgriend.
