About all the 'pretentious, garbage' comments

I am genuinely confused about this. I am not going to say that those who hate this movie are this or that, or those who like it are better or worse, I just want to ask what is it about this film that made some people think it is pretentious? Films don't have any real objective rank to them. Some will like it, some will hate it. All of this is subjective, isn't it? All I read here was either "None of the people I know liked this film." Or "This is beyond your reach" or something along those lines.

I myself liked it a lot. And for me it was because it was sometimes really funny, and it had some moments that were touching and I liked it for what it is. Including the performances of Michael Keaton and Ed Norton.

I missed it in 2014 and had my first screening just weeks ago. I made a repeat viewing the following night.

This flick lingers in the memory like movies of recent years usually don't. I have flashbacks of scenes when I am walking down a street or sitting on a bus. One of the very best and most unique films of the last 16 years.

However, I am an actor myself, so maybe I just have a special bond with the characters in the story (I also loved the 1989 Batman flick, which helps).

'smells like balls' That is a line which was directly into the movie. If writers can only think about those words then i'm lost for words. Why put that into a film? Is it pointless?yes. Do I not like hearing it? Yes. Does it make me mad? yes. Did I like this film no. GET OVER IT!

Okay, but what you are explaining is a dislike for the movie that has nothing to do with pretentiousness. The OP isn't just talking about people that didn't like the movie. It's about the people who don't like it because they think the director was trying too hard to be profound.

If you can read this then you are trying too hard.

Whenever I read someone saying a movie is "pretentious" I read it as, "why didn't they make a move just like all the other movies."

I wonder how many people who thought this was pretentious were big fans of Inception? That's a movie that even those who made it admitted they didn't understand.
