What a handsomely filmed movie
Came into this with zero expectations, impressed by the cinematography
shareCompletely agree. The film was directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, a very talented director who's worked on American Horror Story as well. With Ryan Murphy of AHS producing and some really good, established actors here, this far exceeded my expectations.
Think people are writing this film off too easily.

I think the central conceit of the original The Town That Dreaded Sundown film being based on real events and this film being a ... sequel to the events that inspired the original film? ... was a bit too odd for the casual horror fan.

Agreed.
I found the film to be fairly creepy, especially since most slasher flicks don't feature a talking killer. Most don't say a word. There was also no toying around with the victim. The killer just went for it, very ruthlessly and without pretense.
Add in the excellent camerawork and pacing and you have a very effective, underrated little horror flick.
