Did I miss something or...? (Spoilers)

So, the part where they have the vigil and the Phantom shows up and gets shot...Do they ever explain who that guy was and what he had to do with anything? I might've missed something, but I just remember that that happens, they celebrate, and then the Phantom kills a few more people and it's never mentioned again. At the end when they revealed there were 2 killers, I thought maybe they'd explain how the Phantom from earlier that got killed tied into the whole thing, but nope. I then hoped that reading the Wikipedia breakdown on the movie would shed some light on this, but it does not. So, yeah, what was that about?
