Hangi/Hange a man or woman?

A lot of people don't know that Hanji is actually gender ambiguous. I heard that during in interview Hajime Isayama (mangaka) explained why he made Hanji gender ambiguous. In the anime Hanji is a woman, in the manga it's unknown. Hanji is kind of like Crona from Soul Eater or Envy from FMA/B. Anybody know?

You know what we do. Hange is gender ambiguous in the manga, but portrayed as a female in the anime. Both Japanese and American voice actors are also female.

Personally, I don't find Hange to be so ambiguous. Only a female has that level of batsh*t craziness.

In the anime she's clearly a woman, so I don't understand people who argue about her gender in the anime. She's voiced by a woman and imo something about her looks slightly more feminine. It's very difficult to make someone gender ambiguous in film. They had to choose something.

I guess the anime is slightly more debatable, but I wasn't aware until recently that there was any discussion on Hanji's (or is it Hange? I honestly don't know someone please tell me) gender. I think the discussion arises from the fact that 1) women aren't really sexualized in AoT (except the female titan... why would you choose a titan to sexualize out of all things)so she doesn't have melon breasts 2) the gender neutral name.

Isayama said that he refused to comment on Hanji's gender. That's all I've seen from him on the matter. Maybe there's more. But to me, that sounds like he realized he had a kind of unfeminine female character with a neutral name, saw the chaos over it, and decided to be cool about it. "Yea, if you want her to be a dude, go for it." Tbh it kind of annoys me. Like goodness this isn't a Create Your Own Story. Tell us if Hanji is a boy or a girl.

Hanji, Cameron, Terry.... they're all the same. There are a lot of gender neutral names. That doesn't mean people are going to struggle over the gender of a character named Cameron. Does he act like a boy, look like a boy? Probably a boy. I find the whole thing a bit silly. Hanji's name is gender neutral, so now people are all in a flurry.

Hanji's hair is in a feminine style. Hanji acts like a girl when excited. There are more boys than girls in AoT and every female counts. Imo it's very likely Hanji is a she and Isayama realized that having a gender neutral character made him look good, so he took the opportunity.

Isn't Hange her last name, though? I was under the impression that her given name is Zoƫ.

If you've seen enough anime, you know that it isn't clear that just because a character looks and acts like a girl, it means it IS a girl. *laugh* But I find the character ambiguous as well and have been asking what gender the character is for a long time! They have referred to the character in both the female and male gender in the show and from what I can tell, the character's chest is COMPLETELY flat! Not just small breasts, I mean completely flat! Yet hir personality is quite buoyant and excitable and emotional and these are feminine traits.

I'm wondering, and this is just a wild theory on my part, if maybe Isayama created Hanji to be gender neutral purposely. Hanji is a character who decided to try to understand the titans and in so doing has grown to have a fondness for and kinship with them as well. The titans that ze is so enamored of are gender neutral themselves... with no sex organs and unable to reproduce (at least as far as we know so far in the televised anime). Is it out of the realm of possibility that Isayama would have Hanji also be gender neutral to reflect those titans that ze cares for?

Just a thought...

Humans can't be genderless so that's *beep* I see her as a woman.

Hange was originally meant to be ambiguous, but after both the anime and the live-action movies portrayed her as a woman, it was made apparent in the manga as well.

Well what I'm saying right here is that's *beep*

There are more than two genders. Ever hear of androgyny?

reply

Interesting, she's my favorite character from the show.

She's a woman.

In the manga, a female character says to her "I'm surprised, Hange, you used to have such a crush on him..."

Now, of course, I don't mean by that that a guy can't have a crush on another guy in SnK, but from the whole exchange you can clearly tell that Hange is a straight female.

Fine, fine, I'll leave! But first I'm going to bother these peanuts! Hmm? Yes? Hmm? HMM?
