Generally, very good (spoilers)
It did look like I was going to be the only person at the showing at Leicester's Phoenix last night... In the last couple of minutes, a few more people did wander in. But, there could have barely been a dozen of us and I felt the film deserved a considerably larger audience... That's not to say it's perfect... The dialogue is occasionally a bit clunky - "Sniff my armpit again!" is particularly jarring... There seems to be a bit of confusion about how many years Junn has been in the country and whether she could have really managed to pick up so little English... The characters remain a little anonymous in some respects... For example, what does Richard do for a living..? We find out he's good at cooking - is he a chef..? I suppose this might be intentional - allowing the audience to pick up only scraps of information, as someone who doesn't speak the language of those surrounding them might... And, I didn't find the ending hugely satisfying and wonder if the director has been heavily influenced by French cinema, where that sort of non-ending is common... However, I really did like it very much... Interesting, moving and, occasionally, gently amusing... To be honest, I felt that Peter Bowles seemed to be in a slightly different film. But, Naomi Christie is very good and Ben Whishaw, Andrew Leung and Cheng Pei Pei are mesmerising!
