The "Shouldn't drink and horse" joke.

Not a great joke IMO. Just the wrong way to say it just to make a lame joke. That would be like a modern day person saying don't drink and car. Don't drink and ride would still be as *beep* a joke as don't drink and horse but would at least make more sense.

Do you think he wants some cheese?

Wow why take the joke so seriously? It's supposed to be a light hearted film, one that you can just watch and laugh whenever you feel it's funny. And I laughed a few times! It's not to be taken word for word mind.

reply

Because the joke sucked.

But what if I didn't laugh or find it funny? You act like because it's a stupid comedy nobody can criticize it.

reply

I can just picture you watching the movie and getting incredibly upset over the joke not landing the way you wanted it to.

Consider the daffodil. And while you're doing that I'll be over here looking through your stuff.

reply

You are exactly right. The joke flopped and part of the reason was that it wasn't properly phrased. It didn't sound right, even if people didn't understand WHY it didn't sound right when they heard the joke, the brain knew it was a mistake.

So yes, the joke was bad and the poor execution of the joke killed any actual potential it had to be funny.

reply

I disagree. I'm absolutely sure the writers considered the "don't drink and ride" version of this joke - but that version is just TOO obvious. (Maybe I watch way, way too much stand-up humor, but the drink and ride joke is one I've heard alluded to before.)

This movie is NOT about conventional humor. Humor is taking a train of thought and steering it suddenly in an unexpected direction. Drink and ride is SO OBVIOUS that it's expected. "Drink and horse" IS the joke.

reply

You can ride lots of things, if you told someone not to drink and ride you would be telling them that alcohol makes them unsuitable for train travel and sex among other things.

Don't drink and horse made more sense when you consider that. You don't tell people not to drink and passenger when they are in a car, you tell them not to drink and drive. That phrase logic is useless with horses.

Ware I went to HS some people were charged with riding horses drunk under laws for operating vehicles other than cars on a road

reply

he can't tell a simple joke we all mastered when we were 7.

reply

It's not the most hilarious line in the world, but it's funny precisely because it's not the correct way to say it. Yes, you don't say "don't drink and car," and you would more correctly say "don't drink and ride (your horse)".

But the correct phrase isn't funny, because it's.....correct. The humor lies in the made-up, nonsense wrongness of "horse".

wow people are posting on the new site ! hooray!
i agree - its bit like Josh Weedon language , his characters always doing similar things.

reply
