Since we all knew they lived, and when they made landfall, they were almost dead. So why not spend the last 5 minutes and a few extra bucks for extras and props to show how the locals helped them and then got the Navy to pick them up.

It would have been cool to see, but ultimately not important to the story.....which was about their struggle to survive and get to land.
We knew they'd survive, it was a true story
But sometimes the stories after some stranded mariners make landfall are even more interesting, like how they managed to signal the Navy to come pick them up. Did the natives have wireless?

I understand that stuff can be interesting. BUT, as I said, that wasn't the point of the story for THAT movie. The movie was about their ordeal at sea. Not the events afterwards. It also would have taken away from the ending we have.
I've been in the film business for a while. I'm a screenwriter and what you're asking for would have been cut from the script, or edited out for pacing and time. The you have to think about budget.

Your points are valid, but they could have done a two minute silent montage of natives succoring them and then notifying the Navy during the credits. It wouldn't have broken the budget. In the condition they were, it was likely they wouldn't be able to walk a 100 yard after hitting the beach.

Totally agree. After that ordeal, show us the relief on their faces and their joy at returning to the states after finally being rescued. That's not "too much". Who cares if it doesn't comport with the bare-bones survival story?
