"Buckwild" Star Shain Gandee was found dead in a vehicle in West Virginia this morning ... 31 hours after the 21-year-old MTV reality star had been reported missing, this according to law enforcement.

According to officials, Gandee -- along with 2 other bodies -- was discovered in the vehicle in Sissonville, West Virginia.

As we previously reported ... Shain was last heard from around 3 AM on Sunday morning, when he and his uncle David Gandee told people they planned to go 4-wheeling.

It's unclear if David was one of the deceased people in the vehicle where Gandee's body was discovered.

There is evidence that "Buckwild" star Shain Gandee may have died from carbon monoxide poisoning ... sources close to the death investigation tell TMZ.

A rep for the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office in West Virginia tells us, the bodies of Shain, his uncle David Gandee, and a third unidentified person are still inside the truck where they were originally found. Authorities have been unable to remove the bodies from the scene because of the truck's location.

According to to the rep, Shain's 1984 Bronco is stuck knee-deep in mud in the middle of nowhere ... and the only way to reach it is via an all-terrain vehicle.

We're told there is no cell reception in the area, which is why Shain and the others couldn't be reached. We're also told the bodies were originally discovered today by a passing ATV rider.

Police wouldn't confirm or deny whether carbon monoxide poisoning played a role in the deaths -- but sources connected with the investigation say it's the likely scenario, especially if the exhaust pipe was submerged in mud.

wow, i thought you had to be indoors or an enclosed space....isnt the natural air enough to where the carbon monoxide would just blow away in the wind?

IDK witht he whole carbon monoxide thing. I guess instead of turning the car off they let it run?

It's typically a big danger when people get stranded in snow or ice or whatnot. They might run their engine to keep the heater going to stay warm. But if the exhaust pipe gets blocked up by snow or mud, the carbon monoxide can back up into to the engine and then potentially back up into the vehicle.

Older cars and trucks are more vulnerable because over time the exhaust system will develop leaks. And the fumes can find there way into the car. If you have an older vehicle or your exhaust is making strange noises, you want to make sure the exhaust system is inspected from time to time. Those leaks can be potentially very dangerous.

Obviously no one knows yet what exactly happened. But according to what the reports are right now, this would be the greatest danger.

The Mayor of Charleston, West Virginia -- where "Buckwild" is filmed -- says he hopes MTV will pull the plug on the controversial show after one of its stars, Shain Gandee, was found dead today.

Mayor Danny Jones tells TMZ ... “Of the few cast members on the show already two have had legal issues and now one has died. The show only enhances the negative stereotype the Kanawha Valley already has. I hope the show’s life is short.”

The show has been surrounded by controversy from the beginning ... you'll recall, back in December WV Senator Joe Manchin blasted the show as a "travesty" that profits off of shameful behavior and urged MTV to cancel it even before it aired.

Adding to the problem ... two "Buckwild" were recently arrested for separate incidents -- Salwa Amin and Michael Burford. Amin in connection with a drug raid and Burford on suspicion of DUI.

As TMZ previously reported ... 21-year-old cast member Shain Gandee was found dead earlier this morning -- along with his uncle and one unidentified passenger -- inside a Ford Bronco, in Sissonville, WV.

Shain Gandee, the star of the MTV reality series "Buckwild" who was found dead in West Virginia on Monday, died of carbon monoxide poisoning, a spokesman for the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office told TheWrap on Tuesday.

An autopsy found that two other people found in a truck with Gandee -- his uncle, David Gandee, and Donald Robert Myers -- also died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

The manner of death was deemed to be accidental.

Gandee was found with the two other men in a 1984 Ford Bronco that was partially submerged in mud in Sissonville, W.Va, on Monday. The muffler of the vehicle was completely submerged in mud.

The Gandees were last seen at approximately 3 a.m. Sunday at a local bar, and said they were going off-roading in Shain's Bronco, according to the Sheriff's Office.

MTV said Monday that it was "shocked and saddened" by Gandee's death.

"We are shocked and saddened by the terrible news about Shain Gandee, and those involved in this tragic incident," the network said in a statement on MTV.com. "We are waiting for more information but at this time, our main concern is for the Gandee family and their friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with them. Shain had a magnetic personality, with a passion for life that touched everyone he met and we will miss him dearly."

Production on the series, which is going into its second season, has been halted in light of Gandee's death.

I was surfing channels one night last week looking for total fluff. I usually watch 24 news, current affairs, movies or the odd TV series or show but sometimes I get the urge to just switch my brain off. Usually I watch a B movie or Geordie Shore when I'm in that mood but what did I find but a Buckwild marathon on MTV. It was interesting to see how rural kids in the US live as you don't usually see that side. West Virginia looks like nice countryside.

That muddin' thing looked dangerous but carbon monoxide was not a risk that occured to me. I understand the exhaust pipe got blocked. They don't call carbon monoxide the silent killer for nothing.

Anyways I just wanted to say that it is sad that such a young man has died along with his companions. He seemed very close with his family and his community (the hollar cracked me up).
