Madge's story

I really enjoyed the movie but was left confused by the resolution of Madge's story. Did I blink and miss something important? When the driver came to the roundabout, he didn't turn left or right just continued straight on. Does that mean Madge wound up with her driver? Or did he just take her back to the hotel?

(I love spoilers so go ahead and tell me everything.)

She didn't answer him and started to stare with a smile in her face, and when he looked at her, he understood she wanted to go to her village. It doesn't really indicate they ended up together... Maybe we'll see in the third one...

I got the feeling made ended up with the driver since she realized true happiness was more important than wealth and statuS. I hope there is a third film.

Of course she ended up with the driver. One of the end scenes when everyone is on the moped's saying bye to Sonny at the airport, she is with the diver on the back of his moped with the rest of them :)

Thank you running_blind; I don't know how I missed that.

I dunno, I found this twist completely unbelievable. Would a man want a woman he'd driven around for months, seeing her play off two other wealthy men? Would she be possibly interested in someone who was so much poorer than she was, considering her appetite for the "finer" things in life?

reply

I found it believable because she saw that her driver had a kind heart and cared about his family. He had roots and a wonderfully large, loving family...something she had never experienced. Perhaps her wisdom had provided her with enough insight to realize these values would provide more satisfaction than the empty pursuits of wealth and consumer goods.

It seemed as if she realised the friendship that had developed over the course of the film with him - and that she cared more about that than marrying someone rich. So the last scene shows them riding together - which implies she opted to start a relationship with him. The fact that he has no wife, even when we meet his daughter, seems to be a hint that it's meant to be romantic rather than just a friendship.

^^^^This! (Thank you, Horsewomyn). I too, found it perfectly believable. I think she realized that it's not the things you own that make life worth living, but who you spend your life with. The driver was a good, kind man and cherished his family, and in some ways I think he was waiting for her to wake up. I think Madge finally grew up and saw what had been plainly in front of her the whole time and chose it.

After the driver Babul said there seemed to him no such thing as a difficult decision, that you really always know which way you want the coin to land when you toss it, Madge got a super roguish look in her eye. You can tell by Babul's little smile that he perfectly understood that she liked himself far better than either of the two fat old rich dudes who wanted to marry her. So he drove her straight on to his village and they evidently started a love relationship: she's the one on the back of his bike at the end.

Even given all the competition from all those other fine actors, that was a standout bit, the best nonverbal moment in the entire movie.
