Too much Sonny

I loved the first movie, so was anxious to see the sequel. However, I felt that the character of Sonny was too over the top, too hyper, in too many scenes. It wore me out watching him. I love all the British actors, so I will see a second sequel, if there is one, but I hope marriage will quiet Sonny a bit.

Also, too much background music, especially when actors are speaking.

You are aware the actor playing Sonny is British, born in London? Just checking to make sure you are including him in your "love all the British actors" comment. .

Actually, I meant the elderly British actors, and they're all great.

reply

Ah! You really meant the "British characters", not actors.

Sonny was absolutely without a doubt, the best most desirable thing in the movie.

he was amusing in the first film, but just annoying in this one. mercifully, i understand there is not going to be a third one.

I watched the first movie for the first time yesterday, and then The Second today. The Second has about 46% too much Sonny in it. The first movie was a good amount of him, some youthful comedy to lighten up the elderly cast and bring some movement to the film.

But here in edition two, the entire plot circles around his marriage, and he bounces off the wall in every scene. He behaves like a rather unintelligent child. Too much!

I agree (although it's no reflection upon Dev Patel). The hotel wasn't so much the focus, in the original; it was just a place to 'ground' the characters... The whole drama of who is/isn't the hotel inspector became the main story, this time - and such confusion is as old as the hills, and frankly, not very engaging!

I agree that Sonny was way too hyper.

I loved the first move too. Dev Patel, in my opinion, is a horrible actor. In the first movie, he was horrible, in this movie... even more horrible. He overacts and it's so annoying.

The character of Sonny was intentionally written to be over-the-top. He's a bit annoying & dazzlingly charming at the same time just like a puppy dog being the core of his endearing charm and mass appeal. That's the entire crux of this character which I'm stunned you missed. Dev Patel did an outstanding acting job in both films. He performed the role as scripted and intended by its author to perfection which is a true testament to his impressive acting ability. Read the books and you'll quickly realize he was not overacting. In closing, I do agree the 2nd film fixated a bit too much on Sonny giving it a rather one-dimensional feel as compared to the original; although realizing the entire storyline has revolved around him all along.

Agreed, don't blame the actor. Blame the writer, not only for making him hyperactive, but also for making him a jackass. By the 40-minute mark I was hoping he'd get hit by a minibus.

I like the character but he featured too heavily, and his wedding angst and his feud with the other young man became tedious. I would have liked more focus on the elderly characters, wth him as a supporting member of the cast.

I thought Sonny was just right. True he got annoying and after a while I wanted someone to just pass him the hookah, but it was intentional. He had a lot going on and a lot to prove. Great job to the actor!

At my work I have to mend and test DVDs and this one came to me. I only watched about ten minutes because it just needed a surface-level look-over but... whoa. Sonny was really, really annoying. It was like a human version of Jar Jar Binks. Gratifying to see that others felt the same way.

I suspect the problem is that you have too many paperclips up your nose
