Nothing was in the fridge.
That is to say, nothing unusual.
She was in a state of mental distress. Her mind was trying to process what she had seen and was beginning to shut down. When this happens, the human mind begins to draw on whatever it can to handle the stress. One of the first things is denial. So, you come in from work, find your boyfriend shot himself, your mind says, "quick, do something normal. go to the fridge." You open up the fridge and, "HEY! My boyfriend's dead. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!"
That was what was in the fridge, realization that reality sucks.
I kind of assumed that, but it just seemed so unnecessary. It came off to me more like "Hey honey, I got Chinese! Oh *beep* you shot yourself, I should call 911. Wait, do we have soy sauce? No? NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!"
