tanks

Is it me, or those tanks have a T-34 hull with some strange turret? And i think i also saw a SU-100 there in the tank scene.

reply

My thoughts exactly. Although, I thought it was more of a SU-85.
Anyway, those could have been captured Russian tanks used by the Nazis; highly unlikely for sure.

No just cheap filming in eastern Europe maybe...
Even in bigger budget films you can see American tanks "serve" as German. So if you use some foreign tanks most of the people see them as German tanks. The only problem with this is that people who see movies like this one also know about tanks... :)

ps i just find out they filming in Bulgaria. They fought with the germans, at least the regular army. So they have some guns preserve i think. In the other hand, tanks are difficult to find...

Yes, those are T-34s and some show modified running gear that I've never seen on a T-34 (namely the rear drive sprocket). The turrets were heavily modified for the movie (probably cardboard or plywood). The machine guns were not even installed and we can see the empty hardware for the them. And the tanks were painted in Panzer grey, which was done away with in 1942 I believe. They should have been painted yellow or green, some with with whitewash camo. What's interesting is the DVD cover shows an authentic Tiger 1! So I wanted to see the movie for the tanks. Well, there are no Tigers in the movie (as far as I could tell, I turned it off at 1-hour mark). The SU-85, the SU-100 and the SU-122 were both based on the T-34 chassis.

The German Army stopped using Panzer Grey in June 1943 slightly before the Kursk offensive.
After this change the base color was yellow. The front line units put on their own camouflage colors, either green, brown or a combination of both, to match the surrounding landscape in their operating region.

Later in the war the factories camouflage painted the vehicles in the factories to save time for the front line units.

Regarding the Tiger 1; There are only one Tiger 1 in running order and I doubt that Bowington Tank Museum will ever loan this recently restored tank for any low budget movie.
So do not hold your breath to see any original Tiger 1 in any newly produced movie.
