Is Edith supposed to be unlikeable?

Great shallow, stupid, portrayal of the protagonist, she was all but likeable. Father disapproves of shady guy, woman immediately hooks up with said guy cause... cause... he said he liked her *beep* plot devi..- book. Father mysteriously dies, woman marries guy who just admits being blackmailed right after dad dies cause *La dee da dee da* ALICE IN BLONDERLAND; let's marry Loki.

Then the movie troggs along at a snail's pace while Edith sees ghosts every now and then that have nothing to do with the actual plot, reaching the foregone conclusion the viewers have deciphered 20 minutes in resulting in one of the most unsatisfying endings in recent memory. Terrible film that would sooner qualify as a *beep* romance than a horror or suspense.

I've found her unlikeable in all her movies that I have seen

Amen!

she was the reason i hated alice in wonderland

While the actress is kind of bland, I enjoyed the movie and the character overall. And again, Edith announces, at the beginning of the film when she is discussing her novel/book, that the ghosts are a metaphor and not the center component. Basically, it seems that her book/novel exactly mirrored her life. Remember when that editor guy told him that it needed a love story to work or to be liked by audiences?

I think Edith is supposed to be a very naive character. Her ridiculous decisions, especially at the beginning, can make the viewers very frustrated with her.
I did not hate the Edith character, but I was frustrated with Edith for sure.

Her character was poorly written I think. She started out as being quite sensible, they even made a point of how she didn't believe in romance and how level headed she was, but within 5 minutes of meeting hiddleston she's swooning like a love sick idiot. I mean she never even questioned leaving home to run off with him (despite the warning of both her father and hunmans character), he was a virtual stranger! It just made no sense.

Clearly you are not familiar with the female mind. They are irrational to the point of absurdity. Their words absolutely mean nothing. It is their main flaw. Logic ceases to exist for a girl who is overwhelmed with their emotions. Trying to understand females is like trying to understand quantum mechanics.

Hey, Soldier. Do you know who's in command here?

Edith got even with Thomas. (It's a karma thing, Adam tossed her out of his house in "Only Lovers Left Alive")

Aww HellRaidertr can't get a girlfriend no matter how hard he tries.

Your right on money girl :) I am not even trying anymore, its not worth it, while there are so many whores to *beep*.

Hey, Soldier. Do you know who's in command here?

Keep dreaming. Not even whores are desperate enough to go near your sorry arse. You pathetic, useless no hoper.

She's a 24 year old girl that sees ghosts. Hardly the bastion of sensibility...

Edith is a trope.

Del Toro is exploring the Gothic romance genre, in which the heroine is a vapid, easily mislead twit who falls into danger.

Yet he subverts it, and makes HER the person who is trying to save Thomas Sharpe's soul. (Again, falling into the Gothic trope -- the pure, innocent, virginal heroine ... who in this story, seduces her husband / owns her sexuality... and saves... HERSELF.)

It's actually rather ingenious, if you have much familiarity with Victorian tropes and Gothic literature. The commentary really goes in depth into Del Toro's mental process and the layers of meaning behind absolutely everything that happens.

Edith is a gothic archetype (like Thomas and Lucille), but at the same time a three dimensional character.

Very true. This movie captures so many elements of the Gothic sensibility, but del Toro also personalizes it, makes it his own. I found Edith, Thomas and Lucille to be fascinating characters that function as tropes, but also as "real" people with real emotions - wonderful acting from all. This movie has many layers.

i think its the actress..just about every movie i've seen her in, imdb doesn't like her character ever..

She is not too bad. Mia wasikowska always plays the innocent girl so she plays it well.
