I am glad to read this. I'm watching the film now and it is bleakly hilarious. There are so many tiny moments of mirth that pass so quickly or in pasisng that perhaps they are missed by many. I would think the NOrth American audience (or many of them) would need subtitles due to the thick accents.
The script is very clever and so are the actors. Emma Thompson is brilliant, as is Robert Carlyle. Also love Ray Winstone and Tom Courtenay. I just read a user review advising people to avoid this film, and it just goes to show how different opinions can be.
I am enjoying it immensely and Robert Carlyle has done brilliantly with the script, acting and directing. I don't know what its competition was for the BAFTA, but I would say the win was well-deserved. I hope it encourages RC to write and direct more films. This is definitely a black comedy so maybe some viewers just don't get the "Comedy" part, but those of us who do no doubt are loving this film!
Thanks, Robert!!! I love your work! :)
