Why so disturbed? A few moments of a nicotine high (no pun intended) would also suppress their hunger pangs. I doubt anyone watching this film will be compelled to go out and buy a pack of cigarettes nor climb a 20,000' vertical granite mountain.

Why disturbed? Gee, I have no idea. Let's start with the 20,000 ft. elevation, where every breath is precious. Why share your very survival with a toxic and oxygen robbing tobacco stick?
Other than that, smoking anything at this part of the universe seems quite an unnecessary addition to such an amazing and athletic achievement.
It was so out of character, considering the event, as to be clownish.
