Why did they have to make the smaller ship explode?

Seems really stupid to me really, almost like telling the viewer that there's no point trying as a small group.

If they had developed a antimatter drive then they would have gotten there in 6-7 years carrying 500 people.

if the government had spent the time they could have built a fleet of 100s of these smaller ships to travel back and forth carry people over time, this would have allowed smaller groups land first, start to set things up and build up the area over time, instead of 1/4 million all turning up at once with nothing ready?

Perhaps it was simply to show that like NASA's early space travel we will make mistakes before we get it right. Antimatter is a tough one and I can see us messing it up a time or two as we learn very hard lessons. Just a thought.
