They forgot about Cryopreservation as an option.

They could take even LESS human bodies (and thus a much smaller ship) by doing that way. You could have about only 5,000 people (mostly women) in states of suspended animation, and take BILLIONS of sperm and egg in suspended animation as well. Once landed on a habitable planet it will be the job of the awoken birthers to have a few humans. And by using donor egg and sperm, you can create a whole society of non-siblings that can then breed with one another. The ship can be kept going mostly by computers with generations of crew members to assist. Other than that, NO ONE gets to go. Not very pretty... but survival rarely is.

RitaJeanDotCom: Suspended Animation is still Sci-Fi Hokum. Name me one person that has been revived using such a technique, RIGHT NO ONE. As of preserving sperm and egg for replanting in the future. Particularly Animals and Plants you wish to grow to establish them on the new World that make sense.

Cryopreservation as a tech isn't very far away, in a rush they could start in the next 5-10 years, given the 75 year time frame its not such a bad idea,

territt16: Been hearing that since the mid 1960s along with anti-gravity. Same time frame also. Still a possibility, under pressure and concentrated effort it may come to pass.

1. We as of this moment have absolutely no way to wake people up from suspended animation without killing them, so unless we find a way, this is not viable.

5000 people would not be enough. The gene pool needs to be a minimum of 30.000 individuals or it will have too close intermixing if genes and the end result would be akin to having children with your sister.
