Garbage

As a fan of The Wonder Years and growing up watching Boy Meets World, this show is an insult to the fans of the Savage brothers older work. This show has nothing to do with growing up, as you can see by Cory's character and the girl who plays his daughter.

Agreed. Everything feels forced and unreal. I do not get how this show is still on.

reply

I see your point but it's not ABC. It's on a kid's network. You kind have to look at like Clarissa Explains It All and not Boy Meets World or The Wonder Years.

That's it in a nutshell - all of these people complaining about the content of the show (except the "triangle" - the greatest boondoggle in the history of the Disney Channel) are completely ignoring that fact..

reply

But you're ignorant of the fact that given this show's connection to a show like BOY MEETS WORLD which was not so Disney-fied given it's life on ABC, people are of course going to expect it to live up to BMW's expectations. People went into this show thinking Disney was finally going to push boundaries and bring back the drama it displayed during the 1990s and early 2000s, but it turned out to be just another happy-go-lucky rainbow we've seen countless times this decade as it is. That's why so many people are saying Disney was not the right place for this show. It can't branch out as BMW did given it's limited condition. It can't go out there and a show connected to BMW which can go out there should be able to do that, otherwise the connection between the two shows feels off.

It's like if they did a Law & Order spinoff here minus everything that pretty much makes L&O such with all the violence. It makes the spinoff lame and you're asking yourself "Why did Disney even bother"? It's reasonable why people are upset with how kiddie GMW world is. It shouldn't be so either Disney need to step up their game, something I hope we see with the new That's So Raven spinoff next year, or this shows needs another home for it to truly get mature. Hell, BACKSTAGE is even more mature and hits heavy on the drama than what we see here and Disney is airing THAT so why can't they give their own shows a taste of that medicine?

The ignorance was that of the people who went into the show thinking that there was even a possibility that Disney would push any boundaries. The connection to a show like BOY MEETS WORLD means absolutely nothing to a children's channel.

reply

Why not? The connection to BMW means everything because it should be able to touch on heavy things as that show had and actually look the part of it being connected. It means everything if you want people to go in taking this show seriously. Instead we get a joke that even Disney isn't seemingly into anymore. Boy Meets World wasn't kiddie-kiddie and making a spinoff of it and making it kiddie-kiddie is just stupid. The fact we have Riley not being to able to actually "grow" is the downfall of this show even existing. They were wrong for it and never should have touched it and ruined the chance for something to be equally as justifiable and sophistical as it's parent show.

If it was just some ordinary Disney show it would have faired better, but given it's connection to BMW, of course people are going to have higher expectations of it. That's not ignorance, that's common sense. People thought Disney was finally going to make that one show that could stand out from the others and at this point it's needed. There's nothing wrong with thinking that and hopefully we get that with the That's So Raven sequel show. Again, "Backstage" is somewhat pushing boundaries, not all like that but more-so than what Disney let their own shows do and that's a shame.

No The connection to BMW means absolutely nothing to Disney, to children watch it, or to their parents. The subject of the program on Disney is the only thing that carries any weight at all - for the parents or Disney. Disney is a children's channel - Only a fool would expect anything more than another program for 6-12 year old children..

Not to the parents? That's a dumb thing to say, considering most of them are those who know about BMW and can get all the BMW world references, not the younger ones. Jacobs is obviously paying attention to the older fans too and if that's the case then the topics can go heavy. Again, we're not asking for something completely dark and violent and gritty but something that actually shows Riley's upbringing being as significant as Cory's was. So far, Riley hasn't "met the world" which makes the show dull and bland. So if Disney was really pushing to do this show, they should have had it live up to BMW's expectations or not even bother with it and have a network like ABC or Freeform air it where it can actually SHINE. The connection to BMW means this show should stand on it's hine legs and not be watered down like the other Disney channel shows that bare no connection to mature shows.

No, only a fool like you stupid ass would expect kid shows to not be able to touch on heavy things in a subtle way. I've seen shows on Cartoon Network, Nick, hell even PBS that touched on heavy things more-so than most Disney shows. Disney can do it, they're just too soft these days they can't even give a HINT of it. The TV show "So Weird" touched on things beyond with world like death, comas, a character's parent being a recovering alcoholic, a fire happening in a building and characters almost dying. The Famous Jett Jackson touched on dramatic issues like racial identity and some other drama stuff. That's So Raven touched on racism and smoking. The shows looked serious back in the day. Hell THE PROUD FAMILY looked like something that could have came on BET (which is ironically later did air in reruns a few years ago) but it was DISNEY CHANNEL. We need THAT Disney back right now. Disney can mostly have it's kiddie-kiddie shows, but we need SOME of them to be more for the older audiences like teens and adults that are more than just kid-oriented, again like BACKSTAGE sort-of is.

Um, do you not have anything else to say to me? You were posting yesterday and I made that comment two days ago. I'm curious to see what defense to GMW's watered down campy style you'll have this time. I can't believe you're okay with this and feel Disney shouldn't have to better with their kid shows or at least make some that are more teen oriented to shake the channel up and be more diverse with their demographic.

At least Clarissa was fun. This show is on a kids' network but tries to act like it's high drama. Everyone on the show is so morose.

Speak for yourself, TheDarkKnightMatter. Girl Meets World is fine for me as it is. Cory and Topanga the characters are fine as they are. It may seem strange to some readers but I relate strongly to most of the life lessons presented in the show, despite my being old enough to be the casts' father and grandfather.

(And why would Girl Meets World be "an insult to the fans of" Fred Savage's older work? Fred is not at all involved with this show.)

I enjoyed The Wonder Years back in the day, and liked Boy Meets World (then, and the missed episodes I'm catching up on now; I've seen about one-third of BMW in total, with two full-season DVDs still to finish). But that was then, this is now, and I don't believe Ben Savage owes Boy Meets World fans a clone of younger Cory Matthews. Cory has calmed down now in his 30s, as Angela commented in "Girl Meets Hurricane"; from my observation he still seems (based on my limited exposure to BMW so far, but still through all seven seasons) as goofy as he was when a teenager and young adult. Just mellower and less compulsive, as happens to most people at 35 and beyond.

But Girl Meets World is primarily about the current generation, not Cory and Topanga. Yes, Cory and Topanga are still prominent characters and we are seeing them meeting the world — of parenting. Cory and Topanga are this generation's Alan and Amy. In Boy Meets World the primary focus was on Cory, Topanga, Shawn, Eric and Morgan. In Girl Meets World it is on Riley, Maya, Lucas and Farkle (and now Zay). The parents were/are more supporting characters, even though the actors were/are in the main-credits cast.

Yeah, I know filankey is not a word, but it's gonna catch on.
