Will be picked up

Mark my words. Netflix seems the most likely.

they may just do it but then every time I read rowan and the gang's comments about the show they don't sound like a group of people ready to come back. They sound like they're officially done and going to move on. Every goodbye that I read they're giving up on the characters, saying goodbye to their family on set, sabrina is already refocusing on her music, it's like no one who is actually on the show is fighting for it, just the fans.

at least when the campaign for it not to be cancelled was going on Rowan was encouraging fans to sign the petition. She's not encouraging them to do anything now with the Netflix thing. And considering that it's been cancelled since last year? Yeah I don't know. Netflix can want the show all they want to but if the CAST is moving on then they might as well not. they can't replace anyone who doesn't want to come back either, then it definitely would not be Girl Meets World

reply

It is up to Disney and Michael Jacobs.

reply

It's up to Netflix and it's doubtful they want it. Every canceled show has fans, but not enough or they'd have been renewed.

2017! Time for more Asians on tv and in movies. Get it right DC/WB/Fox!

reply

Yeah but Netflix is doubling down on original programming and they might just want another sitcom to add to their growing lineup of family sitcoms. That coupled in with it being relatively cheap to produce and I could easily see Netflix picking it up.

reply

Doubtful. Netflix is not going to pick up every show that fails on another network. GMW was only on for 3 years and does not have the nostalgia thing going for it. Full House was on for 8 years. It's been off for 21. Gilmore was on for 9 years, gone for 9.

GMW will not be back. It was a mediocre show that lasted as long as it did because of BMW.

The difference is they have the pre-existing relationships with Disney and ABC Studios

Not to mention they have the off-net rights to the first two seasons and have that data to work with.

As for the cast, of course they have gone onto other projects and not saying anytning - and the campaign is only 3 days in and they are not going to get their hopes up. Rowen's working on a film and Sabrina had a tour. But we know they love and respect their fans.

if it happens,it happens, if not it doesn't. It's a long road for NETFLIX to pick up a show, especially one out of production no matter how recent.

They saved "Degrasi" for goodness sakes - and that shows rather long in the tooth so to speak.

If Disney/ABC studios wants to sell the show to Netflix or Hulu or whomever, it'll happen, if not at least the fans tried. If Disney/ABC Studios can make money they'll sell the series.

People of notoriety claim to love their fans. Undoubtedly, they need their fans, but do they really love a bunch of strangers?

That's the point. Longevity shows a show has a large and loyal fanbase. That's why BMW had a spin-off in the first place. A beloved show on for 7 years. If GMW had lasted nearly a decade then I could see it being brought back after a break.

Somebody has to want to buy it.
Time will tell.

I seriously doubt that Neflix or any other streaming site will pick this up. Netflix is in the business of making money. Disney Channel is different. DC gets paid whether you watch it or not because cable and satellite providers pay to have it on certain channel packages. Even if you've never watched a second of ESPN in your life, you're still paying for it because your provider pays for it to be on the package that you're paying for. Don't get me wrong, a channel like ESPN does want ratings because that's how they determine air time cost for ad dollars. DC, not so much since they don't really have ads. But Disney still gets paid even if you never watch it.

With Netflix, they have to have content that people want to watch. If after the 1 month free trial someone determines that Netflix doesn't have any content that they want to watch, then they don't sign up and Netflix gets no money. Netflix being subscription based is a different animal.

Also, people need to stop with the argument that it could've been deeper and more mature on Freeform. A change of venue doesn't change the fact that the writing was bad. But GMW didn't need to get deeper or darker. That's the problem. Michael Jacob forgot how to have fun. Sure BMW had it's deep or serious moments but they also had a ton of laughs too. Most of the characters on GMW seemed like they were sorry to be alive.

And really, how deep was it going to get? I'll tell you. It would've been more of the same of what you've already seen. It would've been Degrassi deep. That is to say, subject matter that only a 13 year old thinks is deep but in reality is just melodrama.

If there is enough requests (demand) for the show, then Netflix will pick it up. They already have past seasons of the show on Netflix, so picking it up to continue the series isn't that much of a stretch.

If the show had high demand it would not have been canceled in three seasons. The way to show there is a request (demand) for a show is while it's airing. A bunch of people signing an online petition means diddly to a corporation like Netflix.

Showing reruns is not the same as recreating a show.

Being on Disney itself, it's limited on how 'mature' the plots can be. Considering that BMW would delve into some more mature issues and this is a continuation of that show, it puts it into a tough spot. It being on Netflix would open the doors to more mature topics. Also, I never said anything about an online petition. For the most part, those are useless no matter what they are for. Getting the same feedback from many many customers, though, can make a difference.

The show already being on Netflix does matter. It means that there are people who are watching it, which helps the powers-that-be to decide if it would be worth trying to resume the series "in house." It's got a better chance of happening since it's already carrying the past seasons. I'm not saying that Netflix absolutely will do it, only that there's a good chance of it happening. Even if the powers-that-be at Netflix were to decide to go through with it, there are still factors that could stop it from happening. Disney may have certain ownership over the series and decide to not let the show continue. Could be that they are unable to get enough of the cast back together to continue, etc.

So, not saying it WILL, only that it MIGHT.

reply

It won't. The problem with the show wasn't the lack of mature plots. Here's what being on Disney did not bring about.

1. An infantile Corey. How is he less mature as a grown man than he was at 16.
2. The Auggie/Ava storyline. I understand it was supposed to be Corey/Topamga 2.0, but it served no purpose. Who gets invested in a "love" affair of a 4th grader?

3. Riley and Lucas never even went out. How are they a couple? They could have held hands and still went on dates and been g-rated.

4. That stupid triangle.

5. The endless worrying about being friends.

6. All the telling and not showing. Not being able to talk about adult subjects does not mean everything needs to be told. Maya and Riley are close. We get it.

Nickelodeon has the same target demographic as Disney Channel and Bella and the Bulldogs wasn't adult, hard-hitting, but it was funny. Something GMW rarely was.

GMW was about about young people talking and talking and talking and worry. And then talking some more.

I really think that the only explanation for the shows continued focus on the "Maya and Riley are close" plot, is that Maya likes girls and it isn't that they are just close. I know some people don't want to go there, but there are a lot of things that happened on this show that don't make sense outside of that context. The Maya becoming Riley. Farkle going whoa. True Maya. As well as what happens in the finale where each boy is dismissed in turn by the girls and then the girls commit to each other.

There is no other show that i have ever watched where i thought something like this about two female characters that are friends, but on this show, that was what was happening or the show, in my opinion, just doesn't make sense.

reply

If anyone wanted to go lesbian of the two it's Riley. Maya seemed like she would eventually be ok if Riley left. Riley would probably self-harm.

I don't think either girl plays for the other team. Michael Jacobs had one goal with GMW and that was to outdo the iconic couples of BMW.

"You think Cory and Shawn were close? Wait to see Riley and Maya!"
"You think Cory and Topanga had a lifetime love? Wait til you see Auggie and Ava?"

What do we want? More Asian actresses and actors. When do we want it? Yesterday!

Except the relationships on this show are not direct comparisons to the original show. Besides while Riley and Maya are compared to Cory and Shawn, they are also often compared to Cory and Topanga. In the very last episode they were compared to them and it is not the first time.

Also, Maya has been compared to both Cory and Topanga on occasion, just as Riley has been compared to both of her parents. It is like Farkle is obviously Minkus, but he is also a little bit Shawn. I think those comparisons are there, but these characters are also new and different people with a different story.

Self harm? That seems like a stretch, just because Riley is dramatic does not mean that she would self harm. I would worry a lot more about Maya who has much less of a support system then Riley does. Riley is open with everyone, you never doubt with Riley, whereas Maya is only open with Riley. Even in the bully episode, they knew something was wrong even though Riley didn't want to say what.

reply

I've never seen that. Of course, the only time I sensed anything remotely flirtatious was Maya pretending to like Zay and Zay testing the waters with her. Of course, they are the only people on the show that are actually good at the craft.

Cory and Shawn acted all affectionate and it was funny and seemed gay because hetero men don't act like that. Maya and Riley were not funny because heterosexual girls act just like Thunder and Lightning. They hold hands, call each other wife, tell each other they love each other, call each other hot!

Regardless I never thought I was watching lesbianism. There are women that love their best friend more than their spouse. In fact, spouses may come and go, they are still straight.

Maya was kidding about Joshua replacing Riley. She'd be fine. Her life was never as bad as they wanted it to seem. She has a mom, step dad, and would still have the gang. Moving is harder on the person that moves than the people left behind.

Maya might not have emotional diarrhea like Riley and Farkle, but she is emotionally stable.

Cory: "Hey, Topanga. You and me."
Topanga: "You and me. Let’s win this thing."
Maya: "You and me. Let’s win this thing."

Cory: "You realize, Topanga, that life as we know it has changed."
Riley: "You realize, Maya, that life as we know it has changed."
Topanga: "Scared?"
Maya: "Scared?"
Cory: "Nah. I got you."
Riley: "No. I got you."

“I know that, if you’re lucky in this life, you get an extraordinary relationship. My mother and my father met each other very early and stayed together for the rest of their lives. Our first boyfriends, Maya. Who knows how long that’s going to last? We’re going to meet new people all of the time. But, if there’s one thing I know for sure in my life, it’s that you are my extraordinary relationship, Maya.”

Also, in the finale Topanga pretty much says that she watched the girls in their bay window and she and Cory always wanted a place like that. A place where important decisions are made and the next best steps of their lives are decided. Topanga compares the girls to her and Cory.

Riley is compared often to Cory as she is the girl and he is the boy. There was also that entire episode where they showed a bunch of flashbacks and talked about how Riley was like Topanga too, how goofy Topanga was at times as a child. Maya has been compared to Topanga, there was an episode where Maya got called short and Riley didn't stick up for her and Topanga talked to her and about how they were both short, but that they were both fierce.

That along with True Maya, Christopher Park, Friends of Dorothy, the statues and the brick. That and as you have mentioned, they many times talk about how they plan to be together for the rest of their lives.

I do think that it is different then how Cory and Shawn acted because that was played for laughs. Riley and Maya say they are forever and it is not done for laughs. I don't know for sure, but there is something to the idea.

Except for their being heterosexuals.

Except they are characters on a tv show, so they aren't anything. They are just what they are being written and that is what i am talking about, how they are being written. To just say they are heterosexuals it is not that simple, in my opinion. They are kids. Riley has thought Lucas was cute, but even right after they got together, she called him just her first boyfriend and said she didn't know how long it would last, but that Maya was her extraordinary relationship. Maya has said she likes Josh, but that has never been more then done for laughs. I just don't know. I think there is something else there in the writing. There are too many things that don't make sense and those things would immediately make sense if Maya liked Riley.

reply

By your logic,Topanga and Cory aren't heterosexuals. They fell in love with each other as kids. Each were briefly involved with people of the opposite sex. Had two children. But maybe they are gay. Never thought of that before.

What do we want? More Asian actresses and actors. When do we want it? Yesterday!

Except, this is a tv show and i am talking about the writing. There are blatant things in the writing of Girl Meets World that suggest Maya likes girls or is, at the very least, less then straight.

I do think that in Boy Meets World the show invested in showing that Cory liked Topanga very early on and that continued throughout the show until they got married and had kids. I think that the same has not happen with the girls and any of their male love interests. There are episodes here and there, but the show has never been invested in Riley and Lucas' relationship. Riley and Lucas' relationship has always been told from the lens of how it effects Riley and Maya's relationship. Because this is a written tv show, i think it is important to take into account not only what is happening within the show, but also the lens through which things are being written. Maya and Josh's relationship has been written for laughs for the most part and even when it became slightly more then that, they spent the majority of the time talking about Riley.

That is what is different for me. Lucas has barely been developed as a character. We never even met his parent or really know much of anything about his home life except for meetings his grandpa. His defining characteristic is he is protective of his friends, all of them. Josh isn't even a regular and has probably been in like seven episodes out of seventy. I just really think that it is Riley and Maya's relationship that is the focus even when it comes to who they are dating. It is their relationship that is developed. It is Riley and Maya's relationship that is the lens of the show.

I don't know if that was there intention, but i, honestly, don't see how it couldn't have been and i think it can't be dismissed as if it is just illogical.

reply

One reason I dismiss your theory other then the fact that I've seen nothing suggesting I'm watching lesbians is your insistence that Maya is the lesbian. If it were either, it'd be Riley.

Riley has the bf, yet she does not interact with him. She sits by Maya. It was Riley that declared Maya was too far away last episode when she was a foot away.

Maya has a huge crush on Josh. Maya flirts with Farkle, she's a young woman that understands sexuality. When Maya flirted with Zay to make another girl jealous, she was good at it. So much that Zay began to like her.

You're right, Lucas has not been developed as a bf, if he was to be a beard, it'd be for Riley.

Riley, while a heterosexual, acts like she has a crush on Maya. I really could see Maya moving on easily if Riley moved. I can actually envision her making new friends.

What do we want? More Asian actresses and actors. When do we want it? Yesterday!

I don't think anyone is a beard. I also think both of the girls like each other. I don't think it is a one way street. I just think that Maya's side of it has been much more developed then Riley's. I am not saying they are lesbians either. I am saying they like each other. that doesn't mean they might not have liked others.

I don't think that Maya has ever actually flirted with any of the guys. I think when Riley and Maya talked about how they wanted to date someone as good as Farkle. I don't think that Riley or Maya would ever get over moving away from each other. They would move on, but not get over it.

Agree to disagree.

I think the two biggest issues will be one, will Disney let the show go, and two, will the cast want to come back. Getting ten people to come back a year after they quit filming could be difficult. Especially when the majority of them are kids just becoming adults and doing their own thing.

I don't think it is as simple as there is an audience, so let's do more. It is complicated, just like all the other remakes that have been coming out recently are complicated. The longer it takes to get released by Disney and picked up by someone else, the less likely it is to happen. Part of me thinks it has already been two long. It has been six months since the actors filmed anything for this and there is no way they would start filming for another six months, at the earliest. Most likely, if it were to ever happen, it would be years and that makes it complicated.

I think about supergirl getting cancelled, the knew before they were done filming, and were able to shop it to the CW and do a quick switch. They were able to do that during the down time for the show. The down time for this show has already come and went.

There's also budgetary concerns. I'm aware of the fact that there are multiple reasons that it could NOT happen, but the fact remains that it's a possibility. If it doesn't happen by the spring time (like mid April or before that is), then I'd say it would be very unlikely to happen at all. I'm sure that's more than enough time to explore various companies for picking it up and to know if it's going to happen or not. I'm optimistic that, at the very least, there will be someone (Netflix, Freeform, etc) that will show an interest.

reply

I agree. It is certainly a possibility. There has already been interest. It is just the next steps that tare the hard one. Possibility and interest only go so far before logistics start.
