Problem with the Ending (spoilers)

Ok, besides the family leisurely burning up together in a hospital bed, what killed the ending for me is they apparently didn't contact Jason's birth parents to let them know he's still alive. No mention of it, no closure for that family. Instead, we get a stupid shot of him catching a fly ball. This killed the movie for me and my wife. We were into it for the majority, but that goodly last shot destroyed a decent film for us.

Exactly my thoughts as well. Soooo a game of baseball makes everything kosher? IMO the ending was just as bewildering and pointless as the beginning, I really think there was just a desperate need for a nice packing at the expense of the story... They really overdid it on the baseball motif.

Why was he in a wheelchair and unable to walk?

reply

Probably because the various surgeries his 'mother' had carried out on him had made him progressively weaker.

I think this was a case of his "mother" keeping him weak, giving him surgeries and medications that weakened him. He couldn't walk because the muscles in his legs were not strong enough. (I kept thinking it was a case of munchausen by proxy.)

The first thing I did after watching about 10 minutes of the film on Netflix was stop it and Google Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy.

And as far as the ending -- not contacting Jason's birth parents -- totally ridiculous/irresponsible/inexcusable.

I was so over the movie that the lacking ending didn't surprise me at all.

LOL at the grandparents acting at the end after the catch and the awkward look into the camera he was holding.

reply

Same here. You would have thought he'd be reunited with his family.

The "mother" making him sick to harvest his heart made no sense. His heart would have been weak due to all the meds and his inactivity.

I thought she was making him sick to keep him at home so no one would find him.

My take on the ending was that the right thing had been done--contacting police and parents, etc. the ball game was just showing that they kept in touch frequently. And, it was a way to show that she influenced his recovery by showing him catching a ball while playing.

No big deal, take it how you want, I enjoyed it for what it is. Sometimes movies have to leave obvious things out to save time.

I just assumed that they would have contacted his birth parents. Though it would have been nice if they'd had them sitting next to Maryann's grandparents at the end watching the kids play baseball.

reply

You're right, that would have cleared up any questions on the ending.

reply

I guess they just didn't want to hire actors to play his parents. Just one of the dozens of bewildering choices made by the filmmakers.

It would have been nice to see him reunite with his birth parents and their reaction to everything that had happened to their son. Also I'm pretty sure it would take a long time both physically and psychologically to recover from an ordeal like that. He seems to have got over in no time at all.

I'm guessing the surgeries made him too weak to walk and the mother didn't want him to run away so she made sure he didn't do anything to make them better.
