The dad was unemployed, and was a nurse. He quit his job some number of years ago so he could stay home and take care of the kids.

I am not talking about things like oxygen tanks or operating tables, I am talking about machines necessary for serious surgery...anesthesia machines, respiratory ventilators, ventricular assists, etc. From what I've researched, both the medical supplier and user have to be licensed. These devices have to be installed/calibrated, some routinely recertified. They had a whole working surgical lab in the basement. Did none of the contractors who built it find it suspicious? Did none of the delivery/installers of the machines find it suspicious as well?

The father was getting the kids drugs illegally through the woman he was sleeping with. I think it's safe to assume that they got at least some of the equipment the same way.
They are trying to hide a severe criminal activity so I'm guessing they went as black market as they could.
