The ages of the boys....

I have to say that I mostly enjoyed this film but had serious problems with one glaring plot hole which has been touched upon in one or two posts but largely missed.

The boy upstairs is about 13 or 14 years old but the boy downstairs is about 8 or 9 yet we are to believe the upstairs boy was kidnapped at birth to save the life of the downstairs boy. This is such a huge cock-up that I really would like to know what the director was thinking - ideas folks?

I agree, but around that age there's always a few kids that haven't hit puberty yet. And sickly kids often look younger.

I tried to reason it that way at first but when you see the dad at the end close up you can see who young the boy is. He isn't just small and underdeveloped, he's young!
Later though i remembered when the dad is telling the mum that he'd already been dead such a long time. Maybe he full on died and the mum has been keeping a corpse ticking over in her delusional grief. That doesn't sound medically accurate but maybe?
