Why not just call the Police?

I thought the film wasn't bad and quite suspenseful, but why did the girl not call the police? As soon as she discovered the boy in the basement and she managed to escape and run home, I thought great she's guna tell her grandparents ... Then she didn't! When she eventually didn't they of course didn't believe her (no doubt thinking hmm if u saw that in their basement u would have came and told us straight away) but then the girl doesn't even call the police! Who would have had to investigate and found it all anyway. Spoiled the film for me.

reply

Exactly my thoughts as well, I would have called the police immediately and not even said a word to my grandparents. Also, how ridiculous when she tells her grandfather about what is going on and all he says is "follow your heart?" LOL!

LinaInverse23 you hit the nail right on the head. I couldn't believe the grandfather's response.

reply

It's funny, too, how he says "follow your heart" right after she tells him specifically that they plan on taking Jason's heart.

Edited for spoiler. (Sorry.)

Peter Fonda has smoked a truckload of weed. In fact he was probably stoned and ad-libbed that scene.

I agree with both of you that have posted so far. So many times a kid would have reached out to the police instead of risking their life going back to that house. It was quite clear the woman was crazy. The girl saw it with her own eyes. It just was hard to like a movie where so many times you thought they would just kill the girl or the girl should call the police.

I'm a parent and was a kid, and in my vast experience(being a kid, having friends and being a parent) a kid wouldn't "reach out" to the police, as you say, but would instead go to their parents or guardians about it. I don't know and can't even imagine a kid going to the police, on their own.

Another point to make (that is important to me), is why the word games? Why do you say "reach out" instead of "called" or "contacted"? I hate these PC/touchy-feely terms, and don't understand you clones that fall right in line with popular expressions/catch phrases. If you had my ears, you'd bristle over phrases like "I know, right," "I got this" and many more.

People are indeed sheep and have lost all individuality.

My comments aren't to defend the movie, I only came here to read comments about how infuriating the Katherine(mom) was and how unrealistic Maryann's determination was.

reply

Why do you say "reach out"

Because "reach out" is just another term for "call" or "contact."

I hate these PC/touchy-feely terms

*Then use your own terms, but allow other people to speak how they see fit.

If you had my ears, you'd bristle over phrases like "I know, right," "I got this" and many more.

*Nobody has your ears, no one can pee for you, and no one can "be" for you

People are indeed sheep and have lost all individuality.

*As if critiquing the speech of others is somehow original?

The movie was okay

reply

My complaint was about how people are moved to use trendy expressions instead of just being real and speaking plainly. Saying "reach out" is so pretentious, and I can't imagine how someone arrives at feeling comfortable with saying it.

It's like saying instead of poor, you're economically disadvantaged or instead of broke, you have temporary negative cash flow. It feels dishonest and manipulative, there's no reason for it otherwise.

In the United States they've started sugarcoating the issue of illegals by calling them undocumented immigrants, as if the poor things just tripped and fell into this country... illegally, through no fault of their own. It's disgusting!

*As if critiquing the speech of others is somehow original?
Hopefully you already see how stupid your comment is, but I can't just assume that, so here goes. I'm obviously talking about following trends and critiquing speech is no more trendy than drinking milk. Sure some people do it, but it's not a fashion statement.

*I see how stupid YOUR comment is because YOU ARE THE ONE who made the remarks in the first place. How would you know the motivations behind the way other people speak just because it bothers you?

If you don't agree with calling someone an "undocumented immigrant" then don't do it.
If you think "reach out" sounds pretentious, then don't say it.
If you think the same thing about SOMEONE ELSE'S ECONOMIC SITUATION... just describe it the way YOU see fit and leave other people to the way they would speak.
You're not necessarily " plainspoken" just because YOU happen to think so. Grow up.

And if you're bothered by speech critiquing DON'T DO IT!!! How bout that? You're criticizing me for criticizing someone else's speech. don't you see the hypocrisy?

You telling me how to conduct myself is incredibly hypocritical, are you a Liberal?

And if you're bothered by speech critiquing DON'T DO IT!!!

*I never said I was "bothered," but YOU DID!

You're criticizing me for criticizing someone else's speech. don't you see the hypocrisy?

*No, because there's no equivalency here. You can conduct yourself any way you wish. You're an adult, right?

are you a Liberal?

*Are we discussing politics now? This is IMDb. Dude, grow up, seriously.

Oh, then why are you arguing with me? You don't have to say it's bothering you, idiot, for it to be obvious that it is. People that deny the truth to win an argument are pathetic.

You can conduct yourself any way you wish. You're an adult, right?
But your other posts prove otherwise. You were literally telling me how to conduct myself. It's amazing how clumsily you backpedal and deny when losing ground.

are you a Liberal?

You've proven that you're too slow to understood this "You telling me how to conduct myself is incredibly hypocritical, are you a Liberal?" as a remark about your hypocrisy and how it's consistent with that of Liberals.

Good thing you've thoroughly demonstrated your cluelessness, so I'd have the opportunity to explain. You need to grow a bit, because right now everything's going over your head.

reply

You don't have to say it's bothering you

*Yes, I would need to say something was bothering me, to have it be so. It's true that I have BOTHERED to post, but that's not nearly the same thing as YOU bothering ME.

Idiot

*Yes, you clearly ARE...

You were literally telling me how to conduct myself. It's amazing how clumsily you backpedal and deny when losing ground.

*I was taking it for granted that you were an adult, and fully realized that you have a right to say what you want to. But you're a fool if you think that you can say anything you want without possible ramifications. Nobody has lost ground on anything.Nobody has back-pedaled.

.....as a remark about your hypocrisy and how it's consistent with that of Liberals.

*That's YOUR OPINION of what you might think Liberalism is, but that in NO WAY, actually describes it. Again, this isn't political.
You're not going over my head, you're just bothered by what someone else said in another post. You have the option to not use the language of another person. So what's your problem, and what makes you think you're being criticized?

reply

I thought that too. Plus missing child cases don't close so the cops would have a reason to search the house of an obvious suspect (a doctor from the hospital the baby was most likely stolen from)

reply

Outside of this, I thought the movie was pretty good, but this whole plot hole was so big that it almost ruined the rest of the film. Bad, lazy writing

reply

The movie was horrible. Pretty much every aspect of it.

reply

you hit it right on the head. I also liked the movie but yeh, major plot hole you cant help but notice

reply

Yeah they should have shown her going to the Police Station the Police could have not believed her or they could have gone to the house done a check. Andy's parents could have some how quickly covered it up.

reply

yeh i found that odd too, even if they didnt beleive her it would have gained audience credibility. I still liked the movie and not what i expected, i really liked it, slow pace movie, but it didnt need to be any faster than what it was. I gave it a 5 as opposed to a 4 which i was gonna give it......I liked its content and hey.....general zods in it so that gonna get an extra boost in my books!!

reply

Eh yup..... I think anyone with an IQ over 25 had to be thinking the same thing. It's just too obvious. As others have suggested, it would have saved an otherwise great film if she at least attempted to contact the authorities even if the attempt failed. It's just too hard to ignore.
About 3/4th of the way through the film I began to suspect we were going to find out that the grandparents were somehow involved. That would have explained their reaction to the situation.

LMFAO!!! Well, if you think that's best to contact authorities, I mean follow your heart. ROFL!!!

A 13-year-old girl in present day New York state, not poor, and does not have her own phone?! Not believable.

reply

I could see a little idiot, adventurous girl not knowing enough to call the police or trusting authority figures enough to take matters into her own hands. My problem is this girl didn't have the personality of someone who would do something like that. I didn't see that type of personality in this little actress. And I can't see any little girl repeatedly going over to some strange family's house after seeing a mega witch for a mom telling her to stay away. At that point most children would refer to the mother as a witch and keep clear. They needed to provide more of a motive for the young girl to keep going to the house, like perhaps she incidentally saw something. She just kept going over there without there even being anything suspicious at first and being yelled at by the boy's pseudo-paerents. That was a little far-fetched for me, especially with this shy looking girl who seemed to want to be aloof from the world after her parents' death.
