Was it York City or was it always New York City?

They seem to jump back and forth with both names. It gets a bit confusing.

I may be wrong, but I believe it was officially New York. People may have called it York City as well, I'm not sure. But the Dutch first named the area New Amsterdam, obviously after Amsterdam back home. When the English acquired it, they renamed it New York as a nod to York back in England. There is also a York in Pennsylvania, where Congress fled when the British captured Philadelphia. So when the British are in Philadelphia, the York the Colonials are talking about is the one in Pennsylvania.
