There were whiteboards in 1990?

I'm almost 30 and didn't see a big whiteboard until high school when chalkboards started being replaced. If that could have been done at least 10 years earlier then someone owes me and many other people reparations for all the nail-on-a-chalkboard feelings when chalk-to-chalkboard contact went awry. Then there's all the chalk dust. Was the delay due to cost or the fear that we'd be excessively sniffing the markers?

Yes there were whiteboards....you should be be old enough to remember that. They werent the standard in classrooms yet but we're used in boardrooms and personal use....

I think we had whiteboards when I went to DT (Data Teknik) education (3-4 years long depending on how you did it), in the early 90s. At least I think so.

reply

Yes they did.

I had a typing class in the fall of 1987 in my high school. We started with IBM electrics and chalkboards. One day, mid-semester, there were rows of IBM PCs, and the chalkboard was replaced with a whiteboard.

Ironically, my spring '88 semester for basic programming had chalkboards in the classroom and Apple IIe's.

My guess is, as budgets allowed, and as computers became more commonplace, chalkboards went down and whiteboards went up.

I'm guessing that still today, janitors have to deal with one teacher that uses a permanent marker on the whiteboard.

They had white boards, but SWOT had not yet been invented.

Same over here: Whiteboards have a big downside, as they need markers and in big classrooms are often unreadable, so they only got installed in tech environments or basement rooms which for isolation purposes had carpets.

Which started over here with language labs, which in some parts of germany were the failed attempts to bring technology into the schools without caring about who would bother to use it. When we got informatics classes, this problem solved itself, as the students were interested in using the machines, while those old recording machines decayed until they got thrown out.

The first time I saw one, was in 3rd class in the mid 70's.
We had a teacher that had some allergy to the regular stuff.

By the early 80's they were everywhere.

Our local school district started installing them in the late 80s due to chalk dust and chalk allergies.

Of course we have a few teachers that are allergic to dry erase marker.

Now the white boards have been replaced with interactive boards connected to the laptops.

The whiteboard was invented around the late 50's/early 60's.

I remember seeing one in the early eighties, but not in school or college. Why get rid of chalkboards right away?
