They would have released it to the Internet so *billions* of people would have a chance to decipher and learn it. Instead the movie shows us isolated individuals with whiteboards.
The whole premise of the movie didn't make any sense to me.

shareI think that they wanted to bring humanity together. By landing all over the world they’re kind of forcing us to cooperate. And once the specialists decipher it and figure out its grammar and vocabulary they would start teaching other people.
I don’t think releasing it to the Internet would’ve been very helpful. It would still be the linguists doing the deciphering. But without a point of reference or an actual speaker (or an air drawer) of the language, they wouldn’t have been able to do that. People weren’t able to decipher the Egyptian hieroglyphs before the Rosetta stone was discovered, and those depict things from Earth.
Learning a language is a social thing. We have plenty of resources for learning foreign languages by ourselves, but many people still choose to go to a course or hire a tutor. You need someone with a thorough knowledge of a language to guide you through the subtleties in pronunciation and meaning (and time travel giving abilities in this case).
LOL at the idea of those aliens hunched over a computer typing with their little sucker hands. Come on dude, you can't be serious.
shareWhile I also wouldn't rate this movie above 7 but to get to your point may be it would not have been advisable to release all the information to the public so as to avoid any panic or hysteria etc. But yes if all the data that the linguists gathered on their visit to the aliens were to be released to the public at large then maybe it would have been faster to decipher the alien language.
