Please stop releasing helium balloons

Sea creatures mistake partially deflated balloons for jellyfish and strangle, which is not a good way to mark an occasion or honor someone you love.

I was thinking the same thing. Very sad event, however balloons mean nothing to anything. Recently saw this balloon business in another movie ! There are many other ways to remember loved ones once they have departed !

Well, thanks for adding a second to my post. I hesitated for a long time, because the movie subject matter is so painful for people and I didn't want to be insensitive. But then. . .maybe people on the boards really aren't aware of what happens with the balloons. If even one person cancels the big display of releasing the wedding balloons or whatever, there might be a couple of animals that won't have to suffer.

Best,
C.

reply

It wasn't insensitive. Releasing balloons is stupid anyway. You have given us an actual reason why it shouldn't be done. Thanks.

with all respect, the comfort i found from releasing balloons on 2 separate occasions for 2 of my sons funerals was really cathartic & gave a sliver of hope for the future. i envisioned those balloons with my personal message on them flying up to my boys & it brought me comfort.

weddings etc fair enough, but nobody can judge a grieving parent on how they find solace.

jellyfish are pretty deadly so i couldnt really care less if they mistake a balloon to be fair! depends too on what part of the world you're from.

i think this thread should really have been one of those you think but dont post, child loss makes you raw and unforgiving :/

reply

Reread the OP. Balloons do not accidentally kill jellyfish. But even so it's pretty crappy to defend remembering dead children by willfully doing something you know will kill other creatures.

not where im from... id be more concerned with it getting stuck in a tree! nearest body of water was ages away

You mean not everyone lives at the beach? HA! Loser. 

im english so im thankful not to live near any of our beaches :P

Are you people joking, or really serious with such a sensitive subject here? Youre whining about balloons being released? Are you that SAPPY, to worry about if it could harm an animal, when you're mourning a loved one? You all sound like you would be against gun ownership!

reply

Like I brought up before mourning one life while doing something that could end another is really, really dumb. I have never heard of anybody who ceased to care about all life just because they lost a loved one.

reply

I think we'd care more about the HUMAN life just lost rather than the possibility of any ANIMAL life possibly lost due to balloon material!

reply

Now we know you would but not everyone feels that way. Losing a baby didn't keep my wife or me from caring that what we do might harm someone or something else. But that's just us.

To each their own I guess?

You're a damn troll.

Not agreeing that it doesn't matter whether animals are killed is not part of the description of the word troll. Anything else you need me to tell you?

Oh please, never have I ever found a damn balloon on the ground that someone has released. Ya know what I do see ALL the time though? Paper cups, napkins, cigarette butts, shoes, and everything but the kitchen sink strewn all over the ground, but you people are worried about the few balloons that people release now and again?

Most people that complain about the balloons probably flick their cigarette butts out the window on a daily basis.

The way I choose to honor my daughter on her birthday is no one else's business. Don't like balloon releases, don't do one. I can't buy my daughter gifts on her birthday, or throw her a party, or take her to Chuck E Cheese. So if for a few seconds I can believe that this balloon is floating up to Heaven for my daughter to receive, then that is the way I am going to celebrate her birthday, and I don't really care what happens to a jellyfish.

Agree 100% with why releasing helium balloons (for any reason, celebratory or otherwise) is problematic for marine life and the environment in general. For anyone doubting it, it's easy to research the data on this. For me, a better option for grieving the loss of someone is to plant a tree. That way I can see the person grow with my life and be part of my world, rather than just be mere pollution.

reply

The reason she can't throw her daughter a party or buy her gifts is because her daughter passed away, not because of money. None of that makes her stupid or selfish. Please think before attacking a grieving parent.

reply

You're one to talk, pal. Apparently, your reading comprehension skills are in the toilet. The poster that you replied to cannot give her daughter a birthday party because her daughter passed away.
