Is everyone in the show supposed to be dead? If so how can other people react to them? How are they in charge of a restaurant?

Only the people who live in the house (the Hathaways Michelle, Taylor and Frankie)

Still confused! Because I just watched the episode today where they were having a chili competition and it seemed like other people could see the Prestons during the taste test?
