The spider was in the book, but in the book it was a far more menacing and intimidating spider (like a black widow) than that ridiculous monstrosity in the miniseries, and I've read from many sources that to most viewers of the miniseries who had not read the book, the sudden appearance of the spider in place of the clown was confusing. Muschietti, for the climax of Chapter 2, obviously wanted the audience to know that the IT spider was Pennywise, so what else could he do than to combine the two? Honour the book that way. CGI was the only way he could do that part, at least with the spider legs, as most movies do these days. Do you bash all CGI movies?

shareWell, my logic is relational. Had there not been any horrendous prequels, I'd probably be less engaged with the sequels. However, when sequels appeared I rejoiced. So, maybe I tend to be more welcoming to anything related to the prequels. However, in all honesty, they are competent movies, that did well in all the important aspects: plot, characters, set designs, emotional content etc.
Sequels however....eh I don't know where to start really. I believe that at the time Lucas was either suffering from some kind of mental fatigue, or was trolling the world by deliberately ruining the movies. Not a big deal, because the concept of space battle itself is an outlandish one to begin with. But even within the peculiar physics of Star Wars space battles, I guess that any time anybody could have done that, but you cannot base your battle tactics on kamikaze attacks. Even in our world, you have things like September 11 attacks, but that cannot be a part of regular combat.

I never whined about most TV shows and movies of those genres back then, I was open to most of Star Trek (Enterprise), Star Wars (the Prequels) and of course, I loved Harry Potter and LOTR. In the last few years, I have objected to Star Trek Discovery (awful), The Hobbit Trilogy (awful) and I just didn't like TFA. I was happy with Sci-Fi and fantasy for the very beginning of the 21st century, it's only in the last five or so years I've grown to dislike a lot if it - maybe it's my age? I'm 47 now.

shareQuality matters more than anything, and I'm thankful that Abrams redeemed a lost franchise. As far as I'm concerned, The Force Awakens is as good as any film in the Star Wars franchise. The original Star Wars will always be my favorite, because it came first, was perfectly understated, and was unlike anything that came before it, but beyond that, TFA can go blow for blow with any of the rest and come out on top. Don't be a slave to primacy or politics; acknowledge what you know deep down to be true. :)
