Why do people want Star Wars to continue?

Not everything lasts forever, and I'm thinking that Star Wars as a franchise has reached the end of its shelf life. No one likes the new stuff, the toys aren't selling, the next generation of children aren't interested in it at all, and the last movie of the Skywalkers is about to be released and enthusiasm is practically nil at best.

It was once the most profitable and memorable movie franchise in the world, but that time has passed. All the movies do now is relive past glories, with no originality whatsoever. When that nostalgia bubble bursts, Star Wars will be seen as unoriginal and forgotten, like so many other franchises have been from the decades past.

Face it, the party is over.

Well it's not about the story or love of the property. Say what you will but the story of the prequel holds up because Lucas cared about his baby, Disney doesn't at all. All they see is how can this make us money. It's funny that all those set ups in Force Awaken, JJ didn't have a answer for.

the party is not over. it just getting started.

See you on the dance floor. *eyes narrow menacingly*

reply

Just getting started? Star Wars is over 40 years old, has had 10 theatrical movies over the span of 5 decades and does not have the cultural zeitgeist it once did. And you think it is just getting started?

ROFL "No one likes the new stuff"

The Force Awakens #1, The Last Jedi #9, Rogue One #12 on all time box office domestic grosses.
Sure. No one likes it.
Are you trapped in a basement somewhere? Does George Lucas have you? Lol

reply

The Last Jedi is a big, fat, nonsensical pile of shit and yet it made a lot of money?
That's because cinemagoers these days are STUPID.
And stop quoting box office grosses, I don't care for those, I don't know why people DO. The amount of money a movie makes is absolutely NO indication of its QUALITY.

Di$ney by pimping Star Wars in a way that was never done by Lucas and has cheapened the brand. Lead by Lucas, Star Wars generated a massive following over the past several decades but Di$ney's over saturation of cheap, sub par quality cash grab films and spin offs is going to wear down any fan base.

reply

I'm still enjoying all of them
Solo was a bit weak imo but Rogue One was amazing

Keep them coming

The mandalorian looks pretty good, im done with the movies though, maybe tv series are the way forward , zero intreast in the new trilogy thats being created.

If i had it my way , there would only of been 3 movies , a new hooe , empire and jedi , no special editions , no prequels , no sequels

People want Star Wars to continue because they're sick and tired of the nihilistic bullshit that passes for entertainment these days, especially these "dark and gritty" comic book adaptations. (I almost vomited when I saw the new Joker trailer.) I'd take a sappy, romantic good vs evil epic--no matter how played out--over another b.s. nihilistic comic book movie or horror film. I'm sure many people feel the same way, which is why they keep turning to these movies.

the next generation of children aren't interested in it at all

That's more a damning statement against this generation, if anything. The main selling point of these movies has always been about playing out a good old-fashioned light vs dark, good vs evil, jaded vs optimistic morality saga. Today's generation would rather revel in moral ambiguity, celebrate villains and turn moralistic superheroes like Batman and Superman into sociopathic, amoral anti-heroes. Given all this, I don't see the rejection of Star Wars as a sign of the franchise's failures. I see it as a reflection on today's youth. Being moral, full of hope and optimism isn't fashionable anymore. It's all about the brooding, damaged, amoral assholes with them.

Brilliantly stated.

Thank you.

Funny thing is that I'm not really much of a Star Wars fan. But having seen the movies, I can see their appeal. So many Hollywood filmmakers are shoving nihilism down everyone's throats, and SW fills a much-needed gap.

The new movies are massive hits though.
A guy on the internet saying "people don't like them" doesn't mean anything.
The internet is full of these nobodies yelling about how the last movie in a series has destroyed their beloved fandom and they will never watch another one of these movies again.
It's an internet drinking game by now.
Other than the disappointing Solo, these movies have been big success stories. Disney is laughing at these guys because they already made back the money they spent to acquire Lucasfilm.
We've got two more NEW trilogies in the making and more on the way so I wouldn't worry about it.

Great post couldnt agree more

All my friends are that age where they're raising children and I noticed not one of them has any Star Wars toys. It's just not a big thing like it used to be.

reply

Odd last year Star wars toys out sold a ton of other properties for boys 7 through 13. Marvel won the race however with Spiderman out selling all other toys.
