ben solo is the dumbest SW name ever
You come up with Kylo but Ben is the best they could have done? Ben solo has a terrible ring to it
shareYou come up with Kylo but Ben is the best they could have done? Ben solo has a terrible ring to it
shareThat's why he went all emo and rebelled. "Ugh! My name's not Ben! It's Kylo! I'm going to the tosche station to hang out with my new friends Raven and Darkmane!"

Idk but Ben isn't it
shareGORDON
shareI have been saying this since 2015; Han and Leia naming their child "Ben" literally makes no sense. That name was picked not by Han and Leia for their child; it was picked by the Lucasfilm committee for the audience, the 'meta' narrative of it is impossible to ignore. Just one of the many ways TFA was trying to milk nostalgia even if it was beyond nonsensical.
shareAnakin or even Bail would have made more sense.
shareTrue; but even Anakin would not have made a lot of sense; Leia had no real connection to Vader or Anakin Skywalker; it would be easier to accept then Ben of course. Only Luke knew Obi-wan as Ben. Leia and Han would have thought of him as Obi-wan; and Han didn't really respect him and Leia never knew him. it is just so implausible that they would name their first and only son after Luke's mentor and by the 'nickname' only Luke knew him as.
Bail would make sense, since that was Leia's father and who died tragically on Alderaan. But we have to remember they were limited. The goal was to exploit nostalgia to the maximum; how many names were available for use from ANH? Owen, Tarkin, ...Greedo? If you decided you must have a name from ANH to give a cheap call back, what name can you pick. Basically either Obi-wan or Ben; and there is more ANH nostalgia for the name "Ben" because the name "Obi-wan" was tainted by the prequels. God, everything about TFA was just so superficial and soulless.
God, everything about TFA was just so superficial and soulless.
And yet many people still praise it as the 'second' best star wars movie ever. Have I slipped into some bizarro dimension? One were people pay no attention to objective story quality as long as something rubes them in their 'feels' just right? This is the result of people valuing subjective more than objective in the art they view; same as people being impressed by a banana duct taped to wall.
Postmodern art is utter garbage.
I don’t think there are any serious people who honestly think TFA is the second best SW movie. On its best day it could only be considered 5, probably honestly 6 or 7.
you would be surprised. there are a good number of people that will make the claim that it is the best or second best star wars film, and then defend that with the most asinine and divorce from logic non arguments you can imagine.
Of course after arguing with them a while they will say something along the lines of "star wars was never that great anyway".
Oh there are. Problem is for some odd reason you think your opinion matters more than other people's. It is time to grow up and realize not everyone shares your opinion.
shareFrankly The OT>Rogue One>Solo>Episode 1 through 3>The new Trilogy.
sharePrequels better than the new trilogy? No way.
shareI don't like the prequels that much but I'll watch them over the new ones. I saw Last Jedi in the theater and couldn't help but think of how much better Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi were. Which they made it similar in story to those 2.
shareSee I view it different. The prequels had the ground work layed out and still screwed it up.
shareLike I said I don't like them that much. The only ones I have actually watched the most is the OT. I do dislike the prequels for the Jedis can't be married crap that was one of the factors in Anakin turning to the Dark Side which wasn't even stated in the OT.

shareIn no universe is the DT close to as good as the prequels. This is just stupid at this point.
shareThe reception says otherwise. Also no the prequels were trash bud, none of them were good.
shareDidn’t say they were good. Reading comprehension is important. The DT were a dumpster fire, with ROS rated the lowest by critics and TLJ rated lowest by fans.
shareTfa is rated higher than any of the prequels by fans and critics. Same goes for rogue one. The last Jedi is higher rated among critics. Only case where it's unanimous is TROS and solo. So nope the Disney films are better.
Last Jedi is divided among critics and fans tros and solo is where the fans and critics see eye to eye. I know it hurts being in the minority.
The Prequels are frekin highlander compared to this crap
shareReception says otherwise.
shareReception from what a bunch of pencil pushers? Sorry but I'm not some puppet with strings I decide whats good
shareI also decide what's good. Thing is the majority disagrees with the prequels being better. Second I will put more stock in critics and the majority than I will you. In my book the Disney films slaughter those terrible prequels.
shareYou aren't deciding for yourself you are letting the pencil pushers do it for you. Nobody decides for me. Not you not them nobody. And I say the sequels are trash
shareNo I just happen to agree with them. There are times I disagree with the majority. In this case you in my book are wrong. In my book the sequels far exceed the prequels. I don't need your stamp of approval to consider the Disney films good.
shareNo but you need the Pencil pushers Stamp of approval. You by default are already wrong. I say the Prequels are gold
shareNope I don't. In my book the Disney films beat the original series that's where I'm in the minority so nope wrong. Difference is I don't think my opinion stands above other people's like you. Since you are allowed to say the prequels are good I'm allowed to say that he Disney series is better than the original trilogy.
shareDidn't you just you take the words of the majority and critics? My opinion does stand since I don't let them control me like a puppet like you do
shareMy order (if I included Disney stuff):
OT (5, 4, 6)
Episode 3 (a guilty pleasure of mine)
Rogue one
Episode 2
Episode 1
Then far below:
TLJ
TFA
(I cannot fully judge TROS and Solo because I have not seen them but from what I read and heard in the very long youtube reviews and analysis, I might place Solo somewhere in the middle and TROS lower end on this list)
And Reylene O'Palpatine is the smartest
Shes only called horsegirl
shareLook at this image newnexus:

On the left is Reylene O'Palpatine, the Irish Queen. On the right is a horse. See the difference ?
Our leading lady in this series looks like a horse
shareDarth Derp was pretty bad too
shareMore like Ben Dover
shareBens perfect - as in - I should have been doing something else instead of watching these movies
shareHow do go from Kylo to Ben Solo? That sounds so plan as hell Ben Kenobi has a cool ring but Ben Solo? Thats lazy as hell Might as well as called him Han or Luke Jr if they were gonna be that lazy
shareI grew up with the originals and as a kid I laughed at the Sith names the most. On top of that, the actual name of Sidious was Palpatine, which in itself was funny.
shareIf you grew up on the originals then you would know the name of the Emperor was not Sidious or Palpatine until years later. Those of us that really grow up with the OT know him only as "The Emperor".
For fun though, where was the first mention of his name that was available to the general public? I am sure it was in scripts and story treatment or what not; but where was the first actual consumer media that it actual appears in and when was it released?
No he was referred to as Palpatine off screen in Starlog Magazine when RotJ came out. I remember laughing when I read that. I mentioed Sidious because it's in line with Lucas' over the top nomenclature for his universe.
At least he got some right like Chewbacca and Jabba, as well as R2D2 and C3PO
Wrong , in the original ROTJ book , which I own and I bought in 1983 , he is referred to as palpatine on a number of occasions
shareYes, if you had bothered to read further down I discussed my surprise to learn that the first mention off screen of the name was in 1976 Novelization.
But it was OFF SCREEN until the prequels; which I was NOT wrong about. Only people who delved into the extended lore would be the ones to know the name. And you only referred to him as "The emperor" as well when discussing it with your friends who had only seen the films. the name was not common knowledge to film viewers only. if in conversation you said the name Palpatine or Sedious people would be asking who the hell you are talking about. So, no I was not wrong about that point. I was wrong about the fact that the name did exist prior to the prequels, it was just not commonly know. OT fans (who didn't read the specific books that the name appeared in) would only know him as "The emperor". And that is who he was until the prequels where he got a name.
I did a little digging and was surprised to discover that it was mentioned once in the first novelization of A New Hope; and then confirmed in the novelization of ROTJ in 1976 and 1983 (respectfully). But it is not mentioned in any other media or on screen until the prequels. So I think to the 'general' audience that only watched the films, he was just "the Emperor".
shareCorrect, but I bought a lot of movie and Sci-Fi mags that delved deeper into Lucas' SW universe back then so that's why I remember the name.
sharetrue for those that really went into the expanded universe they would have found the name. For most fans like me, we just loved the movies but never got to into the EU stuff until probably the early 90's and then when games came out I loved the Dark Forces game and the sequel Jedi Knight.
For me though, he is always just "the emperor"; everything else is just 'cover names'.
Until Phantom Menace came out, I wonder what percentage of fans actually new his name was Palpatine/Sidious? I know it was not 'common' knowledge.
I knew the name Palpatine from some Star Wars comics, but I didn't hear Darth Sidious until some promotional stuff for Phantom Menace.
shareit would be interesting to know how many people had come across the name prior to The Phantom Menace.
shareI think it was created for Phantom Menace but I could be wrong.
shareI wonder if Lucas planned it even. if it was in the 1976 A New Hope novelization; I assume Lucas was planning. Maybe it was not 'official' until Phantom Menace.
The short of it though, he will always be just "the emperor" to me; everything else is pseudonyms that came years later.
