Gotta say...
The opening crawl for this film seriously sucked ass! What the hell were they thinking? It’s about the most forgettable crawl you could ever read, bit like the film actually. Nuff said!

shareAgreed, the opening crawl seemed odd. The story of this trilogy was such a mess that there was probably no way for them to give a coherent update in the crawl.
shareSo what's worse: 'The Dead Speak!' or 'The First Order Reigns.' (after their main base got blown to pieces minutes ago)?
shareAnd then it was followed by a series of special-effects shots that did NOT knock the socks off.
That's something they really ought to do in every single Star Wars film. Put something awesome enough on the screen as you open the film, it puts the audience in a forgiving and uncritical mood.
I totally agree with you! At the end of the ‘very bad crawl’ I was expecting and hoping for something spectacular, something jaw-dropping but no. They really wasted that too. It was about the worst post crawl SFX sequence ever! You are correct in that that scene sets the tone for the rest of the film. Why couldn’t we have had something even half as mind blowing as the Rebel Blockade Runner/Star Destroyer in Ep 4? Shame.
shareOr the space battle at the beginning of Ep. 3? Or even the drone dispersal at the beginning of Ep. 5?
Seriously, Lucas made a point of starting his films with some truly amazing special effects shots and knocking the audience's socks off right after the exposition crawl. IMHO there is no better way to start a space opera, and Disney ought to have made a point of doing the same. It's a Star Wars tradition, and they can afford it.
Couldn't agree more.
shareTo quote a scene from "Return of the Jedi":
Luke: "Your overconfidence is your weakness."
Emperor: "Your faith in your friends will be yours!"
In other words, Palpatine ruins everything. :P
And how much can you trust the Star Wars phenomenon to deliver?
