Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker earned another $2.4 million on Wednesday, dropping 40% from yesterday and a whopping 86% from last Wednesday. That gives Walt Disney and Lucasfilm’s Star Wars sequel a $460.9 million domestic cume. The film is officially over the unadjusted $460 million (counting reissues) domestic gross of the first Star Wars beginning back in 1977 ($1.495 billion adjusted), and it’ll likely end the weekend above the unadjusted-for-inflation $474 million gross (counting the 2012 3-D reissue) of Star Wars Episode One: The Phantom Menace ($882 million adjusted). Alas, at its rate of descent, it not only won’t get anywhere near The Last Jedi, it won’t end up matching the $532 million domestic finish of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

That's better than I thought it would do. I was predicting $700-800 million. Looks like a total worldwide gross of $1.1 billion or just under and a profit of about $130 million.

So they are close to break-even on the combined performance of the two post-TLJ movies. That is a very poor result and I think there will be major changes at Lucasfilm in the months ahead, beginning with Kennedy.

reply

There HAS to be changes after that. That's just the movie. I can't even imagine the hit the merchandising is taking.

reply

The funny thing with the merchandising is that it was doing so bad that they didn't even bother in launching Mandalorian's baby yoda merchadising... and that was the one that succeded. Now the black market is filled with non-official baby yoda's, while the "legit" ones won't arrive until the spring 😄

OMG LOL

reply

Don't let furiousstyles see that, he will tell you it is all made up numbers.

So the final film in the supposed Skywalker sage (ended after Return of the Jedi) will only make around $100 million profit and limp over a billion.

I'm sorry you can spin it all you want but that is a complete failure and everyone at Disney should be ashamed of themselves. They have turned the greatest movie IP into just another run of the mill flick.

How Kathleen Kennedy has a job i'll never know.

It's not that easy to fire a vagina.

reply

At least it's not doing worse than Solo....

reply

now that wouldve been a remarkable achievement! (Solo managed to do the unthinkable – it made even less than the new Star Treks)

reply

Ends the weekend at $478m. Will end up over $505m D and $1020m WW.
Budget $275m so it already broke even.
