Apparently the mediocre quality of the film itself is because they tried too hard to appease the "toxic" fanbase.
Didn't these same critics love TFA, which also tried to please the fans at every turn and had loads of nostalgia-bait? There's no logic to any of this bullshit, of course.
shareTLJ raised the bar by being so aggressive and hard core with its wokeness, I think. I mean all the male characters in TLJ were all pretty useless and pathetic, really, especially Luke. Kennedy was pretty serious about the "Force is female".
Now they are walking that back somewhat. Rey is still Rey, the best at, well everything, but it's not enough. They wanted Abrams to continue along the path that Rian Johnson set out on.
Half the reviews on rt blame the fans already.

shareThey share some piece of it. How much nitpicking and bellyaching did they do over TFA and TLJ again? Now this film tries to please them to its own detriment. Must be nice having the cake and eating it too. Disney evidently retcon TLJ to please the fans who made it VERY clear how much they didn't like TLJ, and the fans are celebrating its apparent failure anyway. It's ridiculous how low and duplicitous the fandom has come.
