Anyone know the first movie to mention Star Wars?

I was trying to find the answer but nothing came up. After star wars came out there have been countless movies that spoof, parody, talk about, or just mention star wars. Does anyone know the first movie to do so? Or earliest examples?

E.T. had a few references. Elliott is playing with his Star Wars toys, one of which was Lando. Also there were Halloween costumes. That's the earliest reference to Star Wars I can think of. I'm sure there are earlier ones since E.T. didn't come out until after Empire.

E.T. came out FIVE years after SW. Of course there has been houndreds of references before E.T. Probably in 1978 alone. The cultural impact of SW was massive. I will say, though, that the reference in E.T. is probably the most famous.

Which one was first is a good question. According to IMDB it is:

Kaptain Kool and the Kongs Present ABC All-Star Saturday (1977) (TV Movie)
A Star Wars production number is performed.

Other references in big movies:

An Unmarried Woman (1978)
The main character's daughter mentions that she is going to see STAR WARS.

Piranha (1978)
Star Wars comic seen.

Hardcore (1979)
A big advertisement on a building and a calendar in Kristen's room are shown. Also, two strippers play with lightsabers.

thanks interlepos. I want to check these films out now to catch the star wars references. That Kaptain Kool one seems especially interesting and I am betting it was quite cheesy given the time, ha. Need to see how I can find that one.

If you are truly looking for the first mention ( and not just a prop ) then it sounds like An Unmarried Woman (1978) is the winner.

Poltergeist, of course. There is a plastic Darth Vader helmet or something in the kids' bedroom, and I believe a poster as well. Then later on, the boy throws a black t-shirt with Chewbacca on it over the clown doll that terrifies him.

Poltergeist was like '82, after Empire came out.

Did you even read Interlopos post? I am impressed by his memory for detail.

reply

Not quite. Poltergeist came out a few years after the ones Interlepos mentioned.

It was Close Encounters. The same year SW was released.
