That double light saber scene...

Dark Rey has a double light saber. I see it and am completely unmoved. Then it flips around like a blind man's cane and I burst out in laughter. They thought this was a good scene? This was trailer worthy? That flipping action has all the gravity of assembling a pup-tent or Coleman oven. Popping a compact umbrella looks cooler than that.

I had lost 100% interest in seeing this new SW movie but now I kinda want to see how bad it can be. So I am back in. They got me. Maybe there will even be someone in it with a FOUR bladed lightsaber! My mind boggles at what the year 2035 could bring us in Star Wars quality.

Might as well have done that.

Yeap, the double light saber is kinda ridiculous.

I guess the tried to design a more 'portable' light saber that could be bend. But you don't need to bend the light saber to make it portable, you just need to turn it off.

Even if you decided to make some kind of 'bending double light saber', the logical workflow would be to 'unbend' it first and then to turn it on, as a security measure. It probably would have some kind of system that could turn it on automatically after it's unbent.

This is not overthinking. An important element of scifi is to be believable. Those small details are often perceived unconsciously: you know that something is wrong, even you cant say what. Good scifi is often populated with lots of small well thought details.

Darth Maul's lightsaber was perfectly fine in this regard, without needing some stupid hinge in the middle: when he faces Qui-Gon on Tatooine, just the one blade is fine, but in the climax, against both Jedi Knights, he lights up both ends which surprises everyone, without the need for some stupid hinge AFTER it's already activated.

There's a good chance that that lightsaber could take off her legs if she's not careful in unfolding it. Hilarity ensues when that moment comes.

@furiousstyles: I agree. Liked it; don't see what the issue is. There are real-world equivalents, with bladed weapons. Moreover, it just looked cool. To me. Clearly, others have different mileage experiences. Shrug. Moving on.

I think you've responded to the wrong poster.

reply

I think it looks pretty cool , not sure what’s so bad about it and yeh it’s trailer worthy .

reply

I envy you.

reply

It's stupid.

reply

Why is it ?

reply

It's basically one step away from this....

LOL! I love the ingenuity of Photoshoppers, and their speed!

That gif lit up the net about an hour after the trailer dropped. They were all over it.

reply

No its not, that image has multiple apparatus

reply

It is. It's lame. Only kids who still watch cartoons for babies will think it's awesome.

reply

It’s a continuation of one of the things I dislike about both the prequels and sequels. The need to make more complicated multi ”blade” light sabers to have something “cool” in the movie. I prefer the simple single “blade” versions in the original trilogy.

reply

I see no problems with Darth Maul's lightsaber, it's less like a sword and more like a martial arts staff, which suits Ray Park's skills perfectly. I think everyone agrees that this particular lightsaber/martial arts fight was the highlight of TPM.

reply

Star Wars in the year 2035? Seriously? If we're not extinct or at war, then I doubt Star Wars will actually be around by then, if the severe lack of originality of current movies continues.

reply

It does look pretty silly. Maybe it turns into some type of lightsaber numb chucks? Ah well, it's a video rental for me unless I hear that C3PO becomes a sith, then count me in!

reply

My prediction is it won't do much more than what you see. It will just be a vision.

reply

I agree that is most likely the case. Still, the lightsaber looks quite silly imo.

reply

Agreed. It's lame. However, if there is any kind of battle with it, I think it will stay locked in position and function just like Darth Maul's lightsaber. At most I predict a vision/duel like Luke vs Vader on Dagobah....

reply

maybe this whole movie will be a vision or flashback...

reply

It sucks. And the fact that they chose it to be an iconic flagship scene to sell the movie speaks volumes for how off base they are.
