Jar Jar Abrams will double down on cheap fan service & OT callbacks

TLJ strayed a bit from Jar Jar's formula of lazy & gratuitous piggybacking (i.e. plagiarizing & repackaging) off the OT and empty mystery/sequel baiting. TLJ essentially pulled back the curtain, revealing the big nothing of what this ST is at its core, neglecting to give much room for false hope & denial for the self-deluded. Jar Jar may be a hack directer & screenwriter but he'll prove himself quite the snake oil salesman if he manages to pull one over again.

Nice. I make it a point to call him Jar Jar as well. I've always found his work to be empty exercises in deliberately withholding information to compensate for lack of narrative. It gets very transparent in moments like when Rey asks where the CGI goiter lady got the light saber only to receive a response that screams to the audience: "We are not going to address that question in this movie."

Add to that, the reported improv-friendly shooting further signals that there isn't a tightly focused direction for the series:

It sounds like there's no script or real direction once again. You think they would learn.

He did the same bullshit with Lost. H and his cohorts had no idea where the series would end and they wrote them selves into a corner. Same with the last film. I didn't hate it but he had no idea where it would go after Rey was holding out the saber to Luke. He let Rian do whatever he wanted. He said do what you want. Rian probably decided I'm going to do the complete opposite of what people think we were gonna do.....Make Rey a nobody,.check, Kill off Snook Check, Kill Luke without giving him more than one movie, check ...

He is basically conforming to the commercial nature of the corporatised film-making business - they heavily market established products to attract audiences and maximise revenues. Art is not the predominant objective it only serves the profit agenda. Abrams is really only exploiting the existing phenomenon of blockbuster sequels. He wants to drag the audience from film to film to ensure good business for the studio.

The whole industry of mechandising films helps to create desperation in Star Wars fans for more content - they must resolve the stories because they treat the fiction as reality, thanks to "world-building" and the fetishising of characters in imagery, effigies like figurines and narratives like novels, etc.

Well said, do you think it will end on a cliffhanger, since that is JarJars MOS?

reply

Hell no...this is it! End of the skywalkers!!!

I think we're going to see Kylo Ren finally renounce the Dark Side after being visited by Luke's Force Ghost a few times. I wouldn't be surprised if Rey isn't crowned "Queen of the Universe" from a grateful Republic after leading a massive campaign that destroys the Sith military power in the Empire. She will have a coterie of Porgs as her attendees. ;)
