IMO I still hate TFA the most

TLJ and TROS only happen because of the precedence set by TFA. This is what TFA did that set up the fall for the rest of the trilogy:

- ruined the OT characters (Han loser regressed smuggler, Leia incompetent ineffectual general, Luke absent without good reason)
- reset the stakes to zero by returning the empire to the dominate force (and just renaming it First Order, thus negating the entirety of the OT plot); all without explanation or sensible reasoning (that it is possible) making it feel unearned. You get this 'it is just there deal with it' type of feel. "don't think just consume product".
- mary sue force lore breaking Rey (one of the worst characters ever put to screen); this "annoyingly good at everything" character that the plot bends over backwards (and breaks itself) to put her at the center of attention and never at a position of defeat or weakness.
- Turned the force into magic powers like magic system thus ruining the more mystical religious like feel of it
- was a complete and obvious rehash of the ANH plot almost to an absurd level.
- Did not provide likeable interesting characters to 'pass the torch' to. Finn had potential until they turned him into a bumbling side kick that had a personality not matching his background. Poe was supposed to die in the film and it shows. Leaving only Rey, who (see above for criticism).
-Weaker, wimpy pathetic versions of Vader and Tarkin. Plus Carbon cut out stand in for the Emperor; who was such a stand in character they got away with literally making him just a clone of the emperor.
- Bad scenes with bad acting (Rey meeting BB-8, Kylo and Snoke discussing Han scene, Hux speech, Maz's bar ) are just a few stand out.
-Horribly paced scenes, rushing from action scene to action scene (that also have terrible frame rate per second causing mind numbing visuals (but at least it is not shaky cam)).
-Boring uninspired music that told no story. John Williams clearly didn't know what story they were trying to tell because it shows in his music.
- Mediocre CGI; it is only been 5 years and the effects already look data. It took more than 20 years before ANH started to feel dated.

Anyone that says TFA was great and Rian Johnson just ruined everything must have not been watching the same film I did. When people say Johson ruined it, I am like "ruined what, there was nothing left to ruin" except maybe Luke; but since he was just absent in TFA IMO he was already semi ruined.

reply

Yeah The Force Awakens is the greatest film in the entire Holy Canon of Star Wars Divinity.

sarcasm?

not going to lie; your posts are going right over my head. lol

Woman: What us your name?
Rey: Rey.
Woman: Rey who?
Rey: REY-venge of the Sith! Bow before your Empress! Mwuahahahha.

reply

Woman: Rey who?
Rey: MaREY SUE.

Actually if Rey had turned to the dark side by the end of TLJ maybe there would have been some interesting story to salvage out of the character; but alas they never planned on letting their godlike inexplicable noble and annoying good at everything feminist (the force is female) wet dream character turn evil. I mean even when they 'hinted' at it in the last film it was so superficial and had no real consequences. Gods' what a garbage character she was from 10 minutes into TFA until the final second of TROS.

I just assumed that you probably have seen it already.

reply

I had not seen it yet; but to be honest, this take on HISHE is almost more sad; ROTS and the DT are so abominable, that even making fun of them makes me frustrated with how bad the quality ended up being. I can't even have fun with how bad they are.

reply

Very much agree with the points OP made. They had all the potential in the world and threw it away by not respecting the original characters. All the films were made with this this completely unwarranted subtle tone of snark towards the original characters, seemingly intentionally rubbing them out one by one. Almost like someone had an axe to grind...

There were a ton of Star Wars books, comics, and games to draw ideas and inspiration from, but instead someone thought that they could write it all up themselves by just getting enough idiots into one big committee room. All these films are textbooks examples of 'film by committee,' where a single visionary is NOT given free reign to develop the film they want. And what the committees ultimately produced was just an idiotic rehash of the original. It's kind of like bad fan-fiction when you look at the films objectively.

What actually shocks me is just how bad they turned out when it such a softball hit to make something at least half-good.

reply

It should be a real softball hit; but there was so many factors working against it in this case; the committee mentality of trying to 'please everyone', trying to pivot away from the prequels and the prequel haters, trying to maximize (exploit) nostalgia for the originals, and no creative vision. Also combine that with the obvious truth that Kathleen Kennedy has a huge chip on her shoulder and really despised the OT fans; also the fact that she clearly didn't really care about telling a story and was a 'personnel' manager only (and not a very good one if you look at all the directors she fired).

The big thing that shocked me is not that people loved TFA at first; but the denial and excuse making after years. I mean I called it for 2 years that TLJ would be a disaster, because TFA was one from a character and story telling stand point. There was no way it would fill in all the holes and be a good movie at the same time, was the thing I said. but even after TLJ came out and was the disaster I predicted it to be; people still blamed TLJ for all of it. It blows my mind the length TFA defenders will go to in saying "TFA was great and Rian Ruined everything" when there was nothing there to ruin in the first place.

reply

IMO you really hate TLJ the most.

reply

IMO I think I can determine my own opinion better than you. I didn't even hate TLJ; I mostly laughed at how bad it was. I didn't rage at it like I did TFA. Why post such a condescending comment? If you can't make an argument, why even bother? What is your goal with this post? it is clearly not to discuss this topic in good faith or have a reasonable discussion/disagreement.

reply

IMO I think I can determine my own opinion better than you.

Well, I'm afraid we'll have to agree to disagree.

You entitled this thread "IMO I still hate TFA the most". Therefore you literally put what you hate the most up for debate.

Even in your reply here, it's only in your opinion that you think that you can determine your opinion better than me! You can't even say for certain...

Incroyable!

reply

Are you trolling or are you truly this ignorant of how argumentation works? I stated an opinion and then I gave reason for my opinion. You are suppose to argue against my reasons and not my opinion itself. I don't have to 'prove' my opinion to you. I have to prove my reasoning is sound.

I think my opinion is better then yours because I provided reasoning for my opinion; you have not. That is how reason and logic work. You failed at both.

reply

Sorry dude, I was merely intially lampooning the idiocy of your use of "IMO" but then you went and did it again! No offense meant 👍

But since you were talking reason and logic:-
"I still hate TFA the most" would have sufficed.

Similarly:-
"I think I can determine my own opinion better than you" would have sufficed.

Your "reasoned" addition of "IMO" is not logical and adds absolutely nothing to either sentence IMO. 😂

Hope this helps - as I said before no offense intended, it was simply meant to be good natured humour at the stupidity of what you'd written.

reply

I did it again because I was responding to your comment "IMO you really hate TLJ the most." Suggesting that I was not able to determine my own opinion on which Star Wars film i disliked the most.

An opinion is empty and worthless if no reasoning is provided. I stated my opinion (which you can't argue against because it is my opinion) and then stated I think 14 reasons for my opinion and welcome people to argue with those reasons (which you CAN argue with). I was trying to clearly distinguish between the 2 because many TFA defenders will purposeful obscure reason with opinion to deflect from the criticism.

IMO = In My Opinion. this is used to make a statement that is purely opinion based. It is necessary for this discussion because people can't recognize the difference between subjective opinion and objective criticism.

There was nothing stupid about what I have written; an opinion is formed out of reason (i hope anyway) but the 2 are not the same. I was making sure everyone can see the difference in my opinion and my reasons for that opinion.

reply

true.... it was just a remake of the first star wars movie.

reply

It was worse than just a remake; it wouldn't be nearly as bad if it was just a remake/re-imagining of ANH. They could say they were building a different star wars universe with different rules. I would probably not think it was a terrible movie had it done that, I just would have said it was another mediocre remake like Robocop. But it was not just a remake because it was supposed to be continuation; had all the OT cast back; and was therefore bond to follow the rules, story and characters of the OT; but it instead pissed all over all of it.

reply

Honestly this is how i feel about. I would have been less offended by an honest remake/reboot that they could have made with its own separate continuity (Like Star Trek 2009) without the need to completely undermine the original trilogy and discard the EU and with it, nearly half a century of Star Wars lore.

reply

Exactly; if they would have just done a full stop reboot; such as Star Trek 2009, it would be so much less offensive. ST 2009 was bad but acceptable because you don't fell like it undermines in anyway the story from before; it finds a way of telling its own version. Those films are bad, IMO, as well but not like Star Wars sequel trilogy which I found both bad and offensive.

reply

Agree I saw through the nostalgia. I can't even bring myself to watch it again.

reply

Yes, I saw through the nostalgia as well; I think only those of use that did not get sucked into it are the only ones that recognized right away what a terrible film it was. And the few of us already knew the last jedi was doomed to fail.

I have suffered through it about 2 to 3 times (never in one setting because it is too painful to sit through; my head hurts from all the stupid I am witnessing every 30 minutes or so) but this is an important film to analyze thoroughly and to make sure you are getting the criticisms very accurate. Because so many people liked it and have a hard time admitting just how bad it is; it is our job to provide very solid reasoning for why it is so bad; or we can't make an objective and strong argument.

reply

The worst thing about TFA and the new trilogy.. where are the lightsaber battles? They were short, made no sense, were poorly choreographed and had no meaning behind them.

reply

This is actually one that i disagree with; I liked the lightsaber battle of TFA. It was more raw and less looking like a dance (prequels). 2 things that were not good though; Daisy Ridley was constantly off queue; TFA hides it better than TLJ but it is there; and story wise the outcome of the fight is just incredibly insulting and lore breaking (not to mention makes the new darth vader and primary villain look like a pathetic little weasel before the "almighty" Rey.) So damn annoying. How much more meaning would there have been that Kylo (though impressed with Rey's natrual ability) still kicks her ass the first fight despite having multiple wounds and just killing his father. I mean he still wins despite all that, he would official be a bad ass; but nope can't have Rey lose even her first fight and 0 training. God, fuck that film.

reply

I think you kind of contradicted yourself a little :)

But this is exactly what I mean, Ray is immediately an expert with a lightsaber and the tension between her and Kylo is so forced. Also how can a lightsaber have a laser hilt like Kylos?

reply

A custom lightsaber can. And overclocked, too, resulting in the fizzly look of it :)

reply

I may have; but what I mean is I like the way the lightsaber Duel of TFA was choreographed even if Daisy Ridley does a poor job of it and story wise the outcome of the fight is just totally wrong. The actual moves they are making; the more gritty saber swings; less elegant and dance like; more raw and aggressive. The best saber duel of the series is Luke Vs Vader on Bespin; second is Luke Vs Vader Death Star 2 (then duel of the fates then Obi vs Anakin; and so on). I prefer the more gritty style of the OT and TFA; but as I said the outcome of the saber duel of TFA is take great issue with. There is just no excuse for why a trained Kylo should even be truly struggling with an untrained Rey.

I don't think those were hilts; they were exhaust ports because the blade's laser (or crystal) were unstable. I am torn about whether or not I like it.
