I watched the original trilogies in the movies and my reaction to them are still fresh. That's how impressed I was with them.

I wrote this before so I'll be repeating. Back in 1977, U.S. was in a funk over Vietnam and Watergate. There were no heroes. Americans weren't the good guys. Everything was gray even the movies like Deer Hunter or Coming Home which had no real good guy heroes to root for. Lucas even said he wanted to create heroes for a new generation and SW is exactly that. No gray. Just good vs. bad. It felt nice to cheer for good guys, again. SFX, music story, characters were groundbreaking and an event.

Fast forward to the prequels. I liked them. I never compared them to the originals because I know that Lucas' message was different. Instead of creating heroes, he tried to warn us about how a democracy becomes a tyranny. Different times, different message. I had minor problems with them like some of the acting, Jarjar, etc. but overall I enjoyed them. Ditto, music, SFX, story, plot, characters, etc.

Fast forward to the sequel trilogy. Force Awakens. No message. Dumbing down. Not creative and some bad writing. Visually uncreative. But, the characters intrigued me. I liked the move away from CGI. Many questions with possible interesting answers. I saw it four times in the movie theater. SW is back!

Last Jedi was a mess! Very bad writing which contradicted the writing from the previous movies. Lucas cared. Even Abrams. Johnson doesn't care about the characters, story nor lore. Now Force Awakens is ruined since it depended on Last Jedi for continuity. I agree with critics who wanted Luke, Leia and Han together and heroic. I would've accepted the new characters if they hadn't ruined the originals ones.

Now, I only recognize Lucas work to be canon. BTW, I only recognize the original theatrical trilogy. The specialized versions are a travesty.

You mean Solo and Rogue One?

Overall I liked Rogue One. The last 15 minutes - and especially the last 5 minutes were great. Again visually uncreative. Some nice SFX though - especially with the Death Star. Last Jedi ruined that movie for me too.

I haven't' watched Solo yet even though I know what happens by reading and talking to fans who have seen it. From what I hear, I'm not a happy camper. I've reserved the DVD from the library so I'll see it soon.

I saw it twice in the theater. I think the problem for me is that Lucas was very visual and gave us plenty of newly designed props, costumes, planets, etc. for each of his movies That was eye candy for me. Disney is just using his designs instead of new ones so visually I find the movies boring. Lucas films also felt more epic.

I know I'll hate Solo, but I'm going to try to give it a fair shot.

Lucas cared. Even Abrams.

Right on the first, wrong on the second. Abrams doesn't care about Star Wars, he just wants to shove his stupid mystery boxes and lens flares into his stupid movies. He fucked up Star Trek, and he fucked up The Farce Awakens, too. Johnson just compounded Abrams' errors with his own.

Abrams isn't the main problem. Kennedy and Disney wanted the original Star Wars movies rehashed instead of giving us a true sequel trilogy. Abrams was following his bosses orders. All of the Disney SWs have been rip-offs from the original trilogy yet Abrams has only made one film so far. Any director who wanted to do something different was fired by Kennedy.

The irony is that both SW and ST fans can't debate which franchise is better, anymore. Now the debate is which is worst.

Well im that guy, watch Empire and Jedi at the Cinemas , TFA I liked, set up some interesting questions, I like the organic feel about it , TLJ on the other hand I cant stand , just aint star wars, the continuity between it and TFA is screwed , Johnson was more concerned in creating his own artistic vision for star wars , almost being controversial for the sake of it, ooo if I do this it will get peoples attention , now I don't give a crap what comes after it, although I did enjoy Solo its one of the first Star Wars movies I didn't watch at the cinema.

"Let's say a person from 1983, when the original trilogy just ended and was fresh and new, travels to the future, 2018, and they watch the prequels and the new trilogy"

Yeah. I just did that , as did everyone else who saw the original 3 at the time (admittedly we were only travelling through time at 1.0 speed) . So what you'd get is the opinions , debates , and etc that we have now.

That's sort of me too (heh metoo). Although only saw Jedi in 83 (too young for NewHope/Empire) and abit reluctantly as wasn't into SW and figured it was for little kiddies (which I was). Was big into Superman most of all.. they actually showed the trailer for Superman III before Jedi so all I cud think about was that as had no idea there was a new Superman coming soon. Jedi with its muppets and teddies/carebears and sword&sorcery king arthur in space stuff seemed silly (funny how 30 years later it was the opposite for me –they showed the BvS trailer before TFA but I was just like meh who cares about a new Superman, I gotta see SW!) . few years later saw Empire (rented vhs), and New Hope (rented and watched it properly, not just half hearted on TV like had near to Jedi) , and got why SW was so popular so was abit of a fan for the prequels which was such a huge thing at the time but everyone (esp SW fans) was massively disappointed with TPM (but I thought it was okish) AOTC was bashed to a much lesser extent but everyone seemed to dig ROTS it even creeping above ROTJ for a while (like most I found AOTC superior to TPM and ROTS superior to AOTC).. but when the sequels were announced NO ONE saw it coming as Lucas had frequently said thered be no more after the prequels and everyone knew Ford wasn't keen on SW so when it news came that they'd be a sequel trilogy (and spin offs) with the original cast INCLUDING Ford in a major role not just cameo it was crazy.this was the Star Wars everyone was wanting TPM to be - Star Wars '4' the sequel to Return of the Jedi with the original cast that NO ONE thought would ever happen in a million years (and especially not with Ford back as Solo in pretty much the lead role - more so than in the OT even). Plus not being made by Lucas but someone who most considered really 'got' SW (mainly due to Star Warsifying Star Trek) after the PT had soured it for so many. so it was kind of unbelievable sitting in a theatre seeing EPISODE VII scroll up in yellow then seeing Harrison Ford in most of the movie and Chewie and Leia and then Luke turning up at the end (so no doubt hed be the central focus of VIII) I was like uh?! have I stepped into a parallel universe to see this movie?.. so it was so much of an event to everyone (remember I not as big a fan as most and even I was kind of spellbound by it) that it was like Avatar where the film itself only had to be half decent (like it was) as the sheer eventness was the main deal. then Rogue 1 was really interesting/an event as it was basically A New Hope Begins and had Vader onscreen properly doing stuff for first time since ROTJ, and VIII although theres all the controversy now it was still a huge deal with Luke properly in it (I actually thought it was more interesting a film than TFA) ..but by the time Solo rolled out the thrill of a new Wars movie had kind of worn off, was too soon after TLJ, and no one was that interested in Young Han and it seemed abit pointless as seen with the BO (they'd have been better off doing a BobaFett movie with a deaged Ford cameo as remember when all the fans seemed to want that back in the 90s). that shouldn't be an issue for IX as its the conclusion of the entire saga and its almost a 2year gap this time (plus Lando is back)

anyway that's my experience with the prequels and sequels from someone who was around in the 80s at the time of the OT

Thats pretty much how I felt about the Prequels & sequels ( although i cant remember a thing about AOTC )
Tried watching Solo last night , coincidentally , fell asleep 3/4 through. That could have been down to excessive beer intake though . Well done on coining "Star Warsifying" :)

Well, since so many original fans hate this film I'd say the reaction would be about the same. I don't think the difference in time as to how long it took them to see it would drastically change their reaction.

It would probably be a shock to see how they had aged. I'm sure all the Luke fans would still be aghast at what they did with his character and how they didn't get to see a hero Luke or see how his powers had matured over 30 years and they'd still be bummed that Han, Luke and Leia never appeared in a scene together ever again and they'd still be like "didn't they defeat the Empire? Why are we still in this situation as if Return of the Jedi never happened?"

People from the 80's could still tell the difference between a blockbuster and an agenda driven, political cash-grab.

reply

It might depend on how old they are in the 80's. Someone younger from the 80's would be less critical than someone older. For example, I was 15 when Independence Day came out and saw it at the cinema. I was blown away by the special effects and liked it very much. If I had seen it an older age for the first time, I might still have been blown away by the special effects but I'd have been more attune to the movie's faults, like all the cliches and the stereotyping, and general silly moments. So probably a similar thing here. Though on a positive note I do believe anybody from the 80's would be impressed on an initial viewing, by the visuals in a modern day blockbuster like this.

reply

I know these new movies are crap, but if I came from 1983 and saw these, I would be AMAZED from the visuals and acting style and action sequences and story rythm and editing.
Plus the story has many innovative elements of racial love and women empowerment.

By today standards, they are sub par drivel created by people with no talent nor vision serving solely the greed of a giant corporation.
