This just needs a Special Edition Re-edit

Supervised by a competent professional.

reply

A re-edit of this garbage won't help it. They need to scrap it and beg Hamill to return. My guess is that they'll be a complete reboot of the sequel trilogy if Episode 9 and all future SW movies bomb along with dismal merchandise sales.

reply

You would be surprised what a heavy handed re-edit with new dialogue and voiceovers can do to radically improve a story. A New Hope was a complete disaster before Marcia Lucas and the other two editors worked their magic.

reply

The script for a New Hope was pretty good before filming.

I cant imagine what is good about Last Jedi that is worth editing. It's literally the worst film I have ever seen in my life. The script is abysmal.

reply

Last Jedi could have been better if so much of its screen time wasn't taken up by:

1. A slow, pointless space chase that wouldn't actually happen in the SW universe for so many reasons

2. Finn & Rose in a pointless side quest that literally amounted to nothing

3. Kylo & Rey using the forcetime app (that wasn't bad but it just took up too much time)

4. The battle of Hoth redux made stupid by sending out junky, apparently unarmed airspeeders (not one shot fired at anything) that can barely get 20 feet up into the air, and of course a soldier has to taste the ground where someone's boot just stepped, like some kind of moron... because the audience is the stupid one, right?

5. Extreme melodrama and extremely tone-deaf humor crammed together clumsily

Other than all that.... It was okay.

=)

reply

I don't think you're aware that you pretty much criticized the entire movie and didn't name one good thing about it. "Other than that" is vague and "it was okay" sounds like settling for mediocrity.

I expect much more from a Star Wars movie.

reply

I don't think you're aware that you pretty much criticized the entire movie

LOL, no that was the entire point! I thought my sarcasm would come through better, but that's okay.

Though to be serious, the few remaining parts of the movie I didn't list really were pretty decent.

reply

I actually know people who liked this film.

The only remaining parts left are Jake Skywalker molesting a sea cow and Mary Rey teaching herself to become an expert swordsperson by waving a lightsaber around for 15 minutes.

Maybe the way to re-edit would be add more comedy, a laugh track and commentary from the Mystery Science Theater 3000s cast.

reply

teaching herself to become an expert swordsperson by waving a lightsaber around for 15 minutes

Well, that IS more training than Master Skywalker ever got.

reply

That's not true. Luke was trained by Yoda long enough to become buff and there was still a little training with Ben.

Rey needed no training because she mind-melded with Kylo (which is stupid and has nothing to do with SW) and Luke didn't really teach her anything.

My problem with Disney SW is they want everything to be completed without any work: a romance between Rose and Finn with no attraction/courtship; Rey is a Jedi with no training; major Luke personality change with no backstory; New Order controls galaxy with no battle nor war, etc.

In the book, Heir to the Empire, Luke's in contact with Ben's ghost for years, but still feels unsure as he trains Leia. She has to make a strong effort to be good.

reply

don't even try it Frogger, we got the high ground:

Luke got training and time to train for years before fighting. And most importantly: when he first faced the prime antagonist, despite having experience with the light saber for years, he still was brutally beaten and maimed.

Different from Rey who, after holding the saber the first time, beats and emasculates the Master of the Ren brutally so he has to be saved from her by a magic chasm opening.

But Luke and Rey are so much thw same, are they not...

reply

You guys (and you're always guys, of course) will just never get it.

Rey had experience fending for herself using a close-range weapon. She did it for years on Jakku.

Luke was a pampered farm boy who excels and becomes a Jedi Master with essentially no training.

Luke even builds a lightsaber with no training! How did he do that?

Vader had been using a saber for longer than Luke had been alive, Vader took down countless Jedi while Luke was a baby, and Luke beats Vader on the SECOND lightsaber fight of Luke's life! With no lightsaber fight training at all, ever! Training "alone" is not lightsaber FIGHT training, FYI. Maybe try becoming a Master at Fencing by training alone and you'll see how unrealistic that idea is.

Rey also lost against Kylo once, and was losing against him for most of their second fight. Most importantly, Kylo did not want to hurt her, he wanted to train her... and he was horribly wounded by the bowcaster, which you guys always leave out.

I notice you guys also never care that FINN stood his ground against Kylo for several minutes, with no Force abilities, and no lightsaber experience. You NEVER bring that up BECAUSE FINN IS A MAN AND HE'S ALLOWED TO DO THAT.

It also doesn't reflect at all upon Kylo's abilities or his physical state at the time, no. Not at all. He's still a "Master of the Ren" at full capacity even though he's bleeding and wounded to the point where one of his pants-pissing Stormtroopers can put up a fight against him.

All you guys care about is tearing down Rey. I'm going to post my final breakdown of why Luke is the absolute definition of a Mary Sue, right on this board, today.

"I notice you guys also never care that FINN stood his ground against Kylo for several minutes, with no Force abilities, and no lightsaber experience. You NEVER bring that up BECAUSE FINN IS A MAN AND HE'S ALLOWED TO DO THAT."

Ah, did you get that everyone? According to Frogger....you're all sexists. Unless you bitch equally that it took Kylo a minute to kick Finn's ass instead of ten seconds you're a hypocrite sexist.

reply

exactly, the hypocrisy is strong with Frogger.

Also, he seems to have missed that Kylo was clearly toying with Finn, letting Finn get up again when he stumbled, torturing him slowly - until Finn had a lucky shoulder hit, then Kylo immediately disarmed and defeated him.

Frogger should have watched the movie...

reply

oh man, I love your rants, but the cognitive dissonance is strong with you.

1. Advise for real life: In discussion you should respond to the concrete topic discussed, not deflect by throwing in random other point you desperately hope might help you. Anyway, your training-lie is herby debunked. Your surrender accepted.

2. Your other deflections are pointless: "The ability to talk does not make you intelligent", nor does it make your absurd arguments valid.

a. If you as a grown up seriously believe that stick fighting qualifies you to beat an experienced swordsman with a sword untrained I feel genuinely sorry for you and your future. Btw did stick fighting make Rey an superb shot too even though hating fire weapons, like when hitting all moving targets while running away, or hitting 3 ties with her very first turret shot, or aiming the turret blindly while piloting...the Ma-Rey Sue awakens

b. Seriously, hurt Kylo again? How many times was that one debunked and destroyed even by the filmmaker themselves?
Poor EmoRen was hit by a weapon that should have killed him, but still he:
-managed to run/overtake unhurt Finn/Rey in the woods
- smashed Rey high into the trees (she remains unhurt because she is a Mary Sue)
- to toy with Finn without haste, letting him get up again, even hitting and using his wound to amp-up the dark-side emo-anger (samurai like)
- then after beating Finn chasing Rey through the woods fighting and hitting as if unimpaired/unwounded
- only after Rey closed her eyes and DOWNLOADED (quote JJ) the Force ("The Force?") she became unbeatable and emasculated the poor idiot (broken emo-saber),

...just watch the movie; also did Rey not already beat Kylo when he tried to mind rape her having him run to Snoke whining how powerful she is…???

3. As for your "final breakdown of why Luke is the absolute definition of a Mary Sue": quote RJ: please, please please PLEASE PLEASE DO IT. I'm laughing already with and at you Frogger.

A major thing that wasn't in the ANH script was the Death Star wasn't readying to fire on the Rebel Base while Luke was making the trench run. That was all thought up in the editing room to increase the tension.

reply

It had to be in the script since it was in the dialogue. Lucas still hired (fired one because he wouldn't listen to Lucas) and directed the three editors.

It's a collaborative effort (editors won an Oscar) but Lucas was still the main creative force.

reply

Nope, the dialogue was done by offscreen dialogue and reworking other scenes. Watch "How Star Wars was saved in the edit" at the link below.

reply

Tarkein: "Since you are reluctant to provide us with the location of your rebel base, I have decided to test this battle station's destructive power on your home planet of Alderaan."
Tarkin: "Are you sure the homing beacon is secured aboard their ship?"
Leia: "They're tracking us."

Why would they be tracked if Tarkin hadn't planned to destroy the rebel base? The whole reason for her being tortured was to find out where it was in order to destroy it using the Death Star.

I have a few problems with the youtube video. He doesn't appear to know that:

It's normal for all directors to shoot much more footage than they ever use.

The creative process is repeatedly reworked until a finish product is created.

Lucas was involved in the decision-making and hired everyone.

Lucas was involved in the editing also. Like I wrote earlier, he fired one editor who wouldn't follow his ideas re: editing. He liked his wife's ideas regarding creating an emotional impact so he had her handle those scenes.

It's obvious that Lucas is a control freak so nothing was done re: the movie without his agreement.

The youtube guy wants to put a spin on the editing by giving Marcia Lucas all of the credit and George L. and the other two editors none of it. Collaborative effort, but still mainly director & creator G.L. vision.

BTW, T.M. Christopher was the editor for the specialized versions which the youtube guy doesn't mention.

reply

No re-edit is going to make Luke the hero of the universe who doesn't allow for the First Order to even exist.

reply

Sorry but in order to fix The Last Jedi we would need at least an hour and a half of reshoots.

reply

Didn't someone on the internet do a redit already?

reply

Ivan Ortega has Youtube videos of him working on one, but I'm talking about an official Disney Special Edition.

reply

The problems were there from the start. The entire ST needs a do-over.

reply

There is no chance in hell of that ever happening so an official special edition is the only feasible option.
